Hi all,

I have a problem with my WD hard drive.

Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB
PCB REVP2 2060-771698-002

Hard drive power ups but doesnt get recognized in Windows 7.
Hard drive spinns without any noise or strange sounds but after 2 or 3 minutes the drive shuts down.

This problem began when i was transferring big files from 1 drive to another.(a few weeks ago)
I try to seek help in the Netherlands but nobody seems to have a usefull answer.

I dont think my drive is broken and i hope a pcb swap will do the trick.
My question is:

Will a PCB swapp do the trick?
Or is it a firmware issue?

Thanks in advance.

I suggest you stop powering it on and get it assessed by a data recovery professional with the right tools and equipment to diagnose the drive. With the drive spinning down, it suggests some sort of physical issue, whether it be the PCB, heads or surface. You certainly cannot just change the PCB without special equipment to reprogram the donor to match the original.

Just to add to the great advice from lcoughey...

For you, it doesn't matter whether the answer to that is yes or no, because you don't have the necessary special utilities and experience to resolve firmware problems, even if that is the cause. :(

I suggest you read this thread :

FYI, if your data is important, I believe that member dobrevjetser on this forum has customers from the Netherlands, although his company is in Belgium.

Maybe it's just the answer you don't want.

Then why it doesn't work (spindown instead) ?

You seem to know the answer. Or maybe not.
My Black Crystal Ball say that you have 0 to 5% probability that PCB is at fault, but then you can face other problems.

If the answer is yes, HOW can YOU fix it ?

To me the problem can be internal (70-80%) , firmware (15-20%) or something related to logic (1-5%) but without seeing the drive and having it diagnosed it is impossible to tell.

Okay,

I just wanted to be an easy fix.
If its internal like u guys are saying, then i just buy a new hard drive.
Maybe the Caviar black is an better option. On other forums they said that the Caviar Green is the one with the most problems.

Thanks for your quick reply guys.
Maybe Dobre can help me,if the price is right otrherwise its bye bye Caviar Green
