
I have a failed WD1000JB-00CRA1 (DCM: DSEHNQ2CA and date of manufacture: 04 Mar 2002) that I'm trying to recover the data from. I notice that one of my computers wasn't up and went to investigate, and found that it would no longer find the hard drive. On investigating further, I noticed that the hard drive didn't seem to spin up or make any other sound or movement at any time. On removing the PCB, I found one of the chips on the board had burned on the PCB. The scorch marks rendered the writing on the chip illegible, but by comparison with images online, it should be labeled L6278 1.2.
I purchased what should be a PCB from an identical model, which is pictured above. All the components on the PCB seem to match, and the PCB number (2060-001102-002) and revision (Rev 1) both match. When I plug the drive in with the replacement PCB it sounds like it is moving, but is not detecting in BIOS at all. It sounds normal and doesn't make any clicking sounds or anything else out of the ordinary. I have swapped out the drive for another, and the computer the drive was originally in detects the new drive without difficulty, but not the damaged drive, and I have also tried the damaged drive in a couple of other computers but it still is not detected in BIOS.
There is no EEPROM that I see, so I'm wondering if one of the other chips on the board might contain drive specific information. I do have access to an SMD rework station, and I'm wondering if anyone might know what chips might contain that drive specific info, or if perhaps there is something I'm missing in the PCB swap.
