Hi there,

It seems the right forum with the right people to ask the following geek question :)

I have two fried PCBs of 2x wd 6401AALS black edition that were working on a Raid1 config.

I got the replacement PCBs on the mail but have no idea how to replace the main IC as there is no BIOS on board (the pins are beneath the IC)

Any company i can send both PCBs to swap the ICs? Can i do it myself and what equipment will i need?

Thanks.

Steven

The following company offers a free PCB adaptation service if you purchase your PCBs from them:
http://www.donordrives.com/services

You may want to ask if they would do the job on your boards, obviously for a price.

The main IC, according to you , is a BGA package??

If the main IC is SMD , experienced computer service guys can do it(with not so expensive tools)
But if its a BGA package IC, its not worth taking risk(complicated even for experienced service guys with expensive tools to swap these ICs).

If you want to recover data from these, dont think of DIY on these PCBs.
you can check the link fzabkar gave , and ask if they can help with your pcb's.
You can take pro help.

Yes its a BGA package Marvel 88i8845E-BHY2.

Board Number: 2060-701567-000
Main Controller IC: 88i8845E-BHY2
HDD Motor Combo IC: L7251 2.2
Western Digital PCB 2060-701567-000

I guess the best option is to RMA the drives and forget about it....

BGAs...

Option 1) Follow the internet bullshit and try to do it on your own in your kitchen.

Option 2) Ask someone SKILLED with the right equipment to do the job for you.

Option 3) Ask someone SKILLED who can't care less about the fried PCBs and can firecover data NEVERTHELESS (this exclude the lamers).

Option 4) Discard the drives and forget about the box and what's inside it.

Yeah probably the best to just RMA it, if the data is not important.

I think the best option is probably to try to replace the servo controller chip on the original PCB's by getting them from the donor PCB's

Thanks guys. Really appreciated.
