Occasionally, as a tech I have to perform logical recovery on Mac drives.

I run Data Rescue...which takes ages but is also hampered by the only ports on my MacBookPro (2010)
are USB 2.0. This makes the transfer of recovered data to an external HDD painfully slow.

Any alternatives?

You don't have to backup all of your files, just the ones you want to keep.

If you want to run logical recoveries on a native Mac client, the only solution is to buy a Mac Pro and connect the drive directly to the SATA port.

We have built a thunderbolt extraction system that works wonders. I just copied 650 gb of data in under 3 hours.

Lacie makes a 2 drive thunderbolt enclosure that does not have any built in raid card. So you can use it for independent drive.

We also have a thunderbolt 4tb (mirrored) destination. It is not a large option, but i am not plucking down the cash for the thunderbolt drobo.

so thunderbolt to thunderbolt is super fast.
