No need to try other, if you can see activity in terminal as you did previously..thats the right way.

Sorry, I realise now I didn't put sufficient info in that last post. I have made a TTL serial adapter some time back that worked with northwind's pin-outs (thanks again for that, northwind). However, I was unable to get the drive to talk to my PC3k's USB serial interface with that pin-out and indeed using those Tx/Rx pins I damaged the PCB I was testing with the power from the USB board. Using the one provided by Ace, it's working just fine with my second identical board, which is great. I don't understand why this is the case because my knowledge of Seagate's PCB serial interface is poor; something you've noticed already, no doubt. Still, we're inching along on this job and I haven't given up yet! Thanks again for your help, guys!!

Note, I have the pin outs for the USB board also from Ace, so I knew which pins should do what. I don't mind looking ignorant here on HDDGuru and readily admit I have much to learn. Even though I know I'm quite good with DR I realise it is a long road to mastering the craft!
