We have received the hard drive from client.

The model is toshiba MK1665GSX ZL01 T
010 A0/GJ003A

It's not detected on PC3000

So we tested the board, and we knew the rom chip is broken.
the chip is broken and 2legs are missing.

So we have changed the board with same model and same firmware.

And results is ..

It's not work.

It's seemed like detect on PC3000.
Model name and firmware and serial No. is show on screen.
but the serial No. is a serial of doner drive.

Is it really impossible to recover the data if the rom chip is borken?
I really want know that..

Hi
Is it valid for newer Toshiba 3.5" Drives as well? We recommend Toshba to our customers ,but in case damage to rom on PCB , entire data is at stake.

How was the rom chip broken?
I mean was it burnt or was it hit or bashed in some way?
If it wasn't burnt then it might still be possible to grind off the black epoxy and make a wire connection. If thats the case then upload a photo of the damage.
If you can get this procedure to work it might just give you enough time to backup the rom contents to a file. And then to start a recovery/image.

Photo shows there is four pins missing. If it were only two missing pins, I would take it on bread board, connecting missing pins to the programmer using needles and read the content.
However It doesn't seem to be ROM chip at all. It has heat sink on the bottom. More likely it is driver chip (delivering power).

Newest rom chips in this casing have heat sink !
Still not impossible to repair but very precise work.

It's definitely a "ROM" chip from a Toshiba 2.5"

Agree. Might very well be possible to read out the content of the chip, but need to take a closer look.

My opinion : removal THAT way may have broken internal connections, OR high temperature exposure may have damaged the chip. Only making a good connection and trying to read it externally can tell.

Otherwise, a lot of additional work by who will recover data is needed.

This should teach that things are not so easy as some people depict them and it's not always Sunday :( (I'm talking about chip swapping and PCB rework)

I too believe it is still do-able, but requires 3 things:
a) A lot of work
b) A lot of precision
c) Someone who knows what he is doing.

We had similar situation with ROM from Seagate drive and we succeed, the hardest just its to expose to the place the pin its connecting to actual memory. The job wasn`t easy and took aprox 5 hours with soldering time.

in this case the Toshiba Rom its smaller and its more hardcore task but I think doable.

regards
