Are there any recovery packages that, when recovering from an HFS+ filesystem (which supports things like "/" in filenames), will automatically remap characters to something safe on NTFS? I do my recovery work on Windows machines and use NTFS as my target drive. It would be nice to find some software that can can put a checkmark into "Remap illegal characters in filenames" and would automatically it would have a nicefn() function that would convert "/" to something safe like "!".

I could install every demo package under the sun but I thought I'd ask here first.

I have tried R-Studio 4.0, it doesn't seem to offer this feature.

I always recover HFS drives to HFS formatted drives using an apple system or linux. Giving an Apple user an NTFS formatted drive is rather useless to them and will only result in a lot of frustration.

If you don't have a mac, get a Mac Mini.

Another option is to install Mac Drive on your windows systems to allow you read/write access to HFS+ volumes.

r-studio is on version 6 now, i would try that. But due to certain issues of some mac files not converting correctly to NTFS, i always do mac recoveries on a Mac and dump the data to HFS+ drives.

I would invest on getting a imaC or something that you can hook the clone drive to it and pull the data off.

MacDrive Pro demo will allow you to format a drive to use & your R-Studio v4.0 is out of date ie latest version is 6.1.153547

Wow, you guys are fast.

I do have Macs but sometimes a customer doesn't want a Mac drive back.

In this instance, for example, a customer had a 3TB HFS+ drive, they want the data dumped to a NAS with RAID. So I setup a Synology box with two 3TB drives (RAID-1) and start pumping the data to that. But, I cannot accommodate about 68-GB of their content that has "/" in the filename.

Having a feature in the software for converting filenames to something safe is not a bad idea, if nobody is doing it I think it would be worthwhile. This isn't the first time this has come up for me.

I know my RStudio is old. I was hoping someone would know if the new version supports this feature. I tried calling their support, they were busy. So I posted at their forum, and was told "try it" (good grief). So I figured I'd ask here and if someone knows of something decent with this feature I'd just buy it.

It is beginning to look like I'm going to have to find out myself. But I'm pretty sure they don't have that feature. I think I've suggested it to them before, along with a few other brilliant ideas. I guess they don't think my ideas are as brilliant as I do, LOL.

Thanks for the tips on those, I had no idea the Mediafour product existed. Absolutely going to get that.

You can see in the picture Broken File Name options you can change to another symbol
Just run a few tests to get use to the updated R-Studio software
