Hi i have a seagate barracuda 7200.10 500gb. It was an external hard drive from LACIE. Two years ago i was using it and then from one day to another the computer doesnt reconize it. So i left it in its box for the future, 5 days ago i found it and i conected it to see if it works, but the pc doesnt see it. So i open it and inside is the same as the pc hard drives, i took the usb adaptor off and i conect it with SATA cable directly to the BIOS but the BIOS doesnt see it either. My questions are: Is a firmware problem?? Can i open it to see if its a mecanical problem??? is there a way to fix it??. I dont know if its a mecanical problem bacause it makes a normal noise but sometimes sounds like if the head gets stuck but i dont know. THANKS

1) You will likely not be able to tell if it is a mechanical failure by opening and looking
2) Likely the farthest yo can get in terms of diagnostic on your own is by searching and building what is called a terminal set up to check the drive's terminal output. You can google or use the search function in hddguru forum for more info.

If you do not feel comfortable with all of that and the data is important, then it is better to consult a pro.

IF the drive is SEEN BY BIOS but not by OS like XP, it's a completely different thing (bad blocks, hence the noise you hear and the result).

You can get more clue if posting output from diagnostic terminal.

So, how can i know whats the exact problem?? Where can i get the firmware from, i know is 3.AFD but how do i install it?

Maybe you could teach me your method to recover failed 7200.10 disks with the common 7200.11 SA fix.

@wasanapa - do not take a serial cable to your HDD if it is infact a 7200.10. there is little you can resolve, and without even knowing what the problem is you could make matters worse.

If there is no reason to suggest any level of mechanical failure I would get this looked at by a pro who can help you get your data back safely and inexpensively.

So if im not a pro, is the any way i can fix it to get the informationn out of my hdd?? I cant afford those companys that cost 6.000 dollars the GB. Please tell me that theres still a way to get my hdd back.

If your data is critical, its not worth DIY risk.
Not all recoveries cost that much, it depends upon many other factors.

First you need to diagnose the problem, then think about fixing it.
Hence it was suggested to get a terminal report from your drive
(to know the current status it is in)
You will have to make an RS232 to TTL convertor(or buy one) and post the terminal report
