I have an AVID (Medea) FCR2 (not 2X) 5 drive RAID case with 1.8 TB of storage across the RAID. The chassis's firmware has become completely corrupted (due o uploading the wrong firmware) and it will not respond, but the drives are most likely OK.

Does anyone know what style of RAID this drive uses? Can I take the drives out and put them into some other kind of chassis and recover the data?

Or can I access the drives one by one in another unit and retrieve the data that way?

If you ask that question, then the answer is no!
I would recommend you to contact DR-Kiev here at the forum: member10820.html

for Data Access, you will need:

1- Connect those drives direct to pc
2- winhex, r-studio + TV
3- most important - Pro. help

for DIY testing:

1- Clone those drives
2- use terminal access to see how bad is the FW damage and try to access it.

this reminds me with Old Sun storage which i was playing with long time back
it is not as easy as it looks btw.

but works better by connecting all those drives with the Winhex & correct parameters to rebuild it and get ur data from it

good luck

This free software really helps in finding parameters for a RAID to be built in R-Studio:
ReclaiMe Free RAID Recovery.

With all my respect, i tried it many times in Raid5, and spent hours waiting and finally got some FALSE/WRONG parameters
i tried it in 5 cases NONE WAS CORRECT.

then i found that there is nothing like Understanding how the damn raid works, and better the Manual way than the false Auto.

might work with others, BUT NEVER WORKED WITH ME.

but worth a try... why not.

For me, I get some good result using Reclaime, but mostly I set it going and manually work out parameters while it runs. Usually I find manual parameters in Winhex before Reclaime finishes :)

If the data on the system is important to you, I seriously suggest you get it into the hands of a pro before you accidentally cause permanent data loss.

Unfortunately, I live and work on a ship in the Caribbean, and we never go to the US. I don't think I will find a recovery pro in these islands.

Has anyone used any software that can derive the RAID configuration once it sees all the drives in correct numerical sequence? Because if someone has done it I would love to know what the commands to use are.

Einstein9, I agree with you. Can you recommend some instructional material on how RAID works, with respect to finding out what RAID style is being used?

well there is NO STANDARD to start with, example:

NAS storage uses (sometimes) the same parameters (based on brand)
Servers like IBM, Dell, Rack Servers, all of those , Based on brands, and sometimes up2 the one who do it on the beginning

no one call tell you use this setting/parameters and will work

must have a look @ winhex (for all of those drives) and based on that can judge the correct parameters

now, for me for example, discovering RAID5 parameters from 4 drives, might take 2-3h (depends maybe less)
but for Dr.Kiev here, i don`t think this will take more than 2-3min (depends)

i guess you see the point here

and good luck, hope this helps you deciding.

If you ready to spend some funds, you can ask for remote help any knowlegable persons from this forum.
