Hi,

I recently purchased a 2060-701590-000 PCB for my 1TB WD external drive as it wasn't powering up at all.

I know I need to replace the BIOS chip before everything will work, but before finding someone to replace the BIOS chip for me, I wanted to see if the drive would power up at all.

The good news is that the drive powered up fine - at least at first, proving that the old PCB had failed.

The bad news was that after about 20-30 seconds the drive exhibited something that sounds ominously like the click of death.

So my question is... is the clicking sound I hear definitely the click of death, or could it be a result of not changing the BIOS chip?

I fear I already know the answer to this, but am looking for someone with a little more knowledge on the matter...

The ROM needs to be swapped for it holds adaptive to the drive. When a PCB burns you have a 50/50 chance that you do not damage the preamp on your heads. But for now the drive will click with a non native PCB swap out. If you can not solder or do not have the skills you can try and take this to a person who can do it for you. But consider this one. If this person messes up the ROM when swapping your chances go way down in your DIY attempt to fix this drive.
