Hi, I have a wd800jd-75MSA3 harddrive that a friend brought me,she needs her photos which are on it but can't access it. Its locked with an ATA password.
So far I have run the script .dump in MHDD and now it has dumped the 22.bin.
I have found this string
25 16 20 2c 17 25 16 23 26 12
Am I on the right track to cracking this password?
I want to know how to enter this string so I can unlock the harddrive.
I have attached a screenshot of 22.bin in my hex editor program.
Thanx all

Before I try this method:
If I do this, will I recover the data on the drive as well?
Or does this just allow me to erase the drive and make it usable again?
(I would prefer to have the data back...)
THanks,
Ari

This thread is not discussing the WD Smartware password protection. Nothing discussed in this thread can help you. You have already asked your question in your own thread - any questions in this thread about your situation will be a waste of time.

I try also delete the password with Zu (connecting through a SATA to IDE converter of course) but i get the error UNLOCK NOT DONE.

Thanks for your offer, but it is a challenge that I would like to do for myself.
If i don't practice, i don´t learn.
And if i can´t do this, i prefer buy another hard disk.
Thanks for your attention and amability.

The User and Master passwords are clearly visible. Research page 3 of this topic.

Hi,
What problems can prevent reading the pw? I have tried
    mhdd scripts -> drive error or no drq
    zu -> unlock not done and on an acer notebook it reported some strange characters ╣♀♠└► (I also tried them) and said no password bye - don't know what that means
    mavr_r -> didn't read the modules
    wdr demo -> reported cleared, but it didn't
    wdr full -> reported error
    wdmarvel -> reported error
Drive is wd 1600bevs. Tried with a faulty wd drive that had no password and the bin files were created without problem. So no wrong bios setting, no mobo incompatibility.
Smart is good. Drive identifies quickly. Something prevents reading the module containing the password (other modules are also unreadable).
Password is set to user high and and HDAT2 reported that master pw was changed.
Can anyone help?

My apologies, but lots of people had no DRQ or drive reports error problems finding their password, just like me. I thought that problems leading to these errors could be discussed here, giving a chance to everyone to solve his or her - more complicated than running a simple script - problem. But of course I may be wrong and can open a separate topic like Help! I need my heads map back! - if no answers are received here, but of course no one - who is unable to find his pw due to a.m. errors - will read it.

@Spildit,

I think you were correct a few posts ago - this thread is for (only) password-related issue. The drive from helpless clearly has other issues, and there are too many possible causes for it to be sensible discussing each one in this thread IMHO. Otherwise many many different causes all get mixed into this one thread, and the thread becomes even more difficult for other people to read. :(

Better to discuss one specific drive's issues which causes a (likely side-effect, not genuine) report of being password-locked, but is clearly a sick drive, in a new thread IMHO
