Hi!

Is there any chance on getting data off a scratched HDD with a radial scratch 3mm thick close to the inner edge of the disk 5mm distance from the edge. Model HDS723020BLA642. Does anybody know someone who does recovery in such cases?

Thanks.

Depends on what else is damaged. And on your budget.

Hi,
You would need to take to a DR Lab to get a quote. It seems that to know this, you must have opened the drive, and this could already be a factor in an increased cost. As for getting data back because of the damage, a photo may help the pros here, but to me the damage sounds quite extensive. I wish you luck though.

Here are the photos of the disk.

Maybe I expressed myself not very clearly: I am looking for a DR Lab that already DID such cases before, has appropriate devices, knowhow and had success.

One thing is expectations another is real life. I had success, but every case is different so it may not apply to this one. Not in your favor : already opened drive, contamination, extensive damage.

@OP
If the budget is unlimited and no time restrictions, the best techs with the best tools in the world can try recovering forever until exhausting all the parts in the world.

This is kind of what BlackST is saying...

Best wishes

More or less.... yes, that's it. 8)

For me, I understand, that if I was the OP, I would not be wasting my time.. and money.
But maybe the data is worth something, so wth?!?

It was for the OP. These are case where diagnose itself need parts, and outcome is unknown. Just in case a free diagnose is requested and... wonder why rejected.

I understand that the price is huge. The client also knows it. He is currently thinking. So why not?

I also understand that in this case we more-or-less talk about probability of success. If anybody has already had experience with high-density Hitachi/Hitachi-Arms and wishes to offer help - send me a PM:

1. Number of Hitachi cases with scratches on the surface you/company did.
2. Number of cases when client reported that enough info was recovered.
3. Approximate number of donors.
4. Price + what is included, what is not included.

All details of your offer including your name but price will be kept private.

No, I understood what you were saying, I was just being sarcastic in putting things in perspective from the OPs point of view.

I would not reject the case, BUT I also do not feel like dealing with:

1. Number of Hitachi cases with scratches on the surface you/company did.
2. Number of cases when client reported that enough info was recovered.
3. Approximate number of donors.
4. Price + what is included, what is not included.

Because my instantaneous crazy inside voice says "Ahh, are you serious with this request?" and just start laughing. Don't feel like getting annoyed over stupidity when people do not understand why they pay such and such fees upfront for potentially such and such likely outcome.

Just take the drive to hitachi technical who should have a department to recover data if no one on here will take the case seriously...

Let me explain my bold statement:
Just completed one of these dropped Hitachi 2TB recoveries with similar damage as OP. Partial recovery for a photography studio with high amount of data, over 1TB.
Took about 3 months and about 5 parts, until it got to the point it start killing parts on power on.
Based on outcome, lots of complaint, drastic cost reduction (a loss essentially as barely just broken even with parts cost alone), occupied one of the resources for that long, so more or less a giant headache. Hence my annoyance. Sorry.

Best wishes

@OP, you're looking at a low-4-figure non-refundable for parts only and a high-4-figure in case of success. Maybe 5-figure as well.

Thanks everybody who replied!

Prices from northwind match what I have received from other sources and what I have told my client.

It is also clear that in this case a DR specialist uses spare parts, but success cannot be guaranteed. Spare parts should be paid, of cource, in advance. Also time spent should be paid. So "no data - no money" rule does not work here. That's what I also told my client.

Still, I am looking for someone who DID recovery on high-density drives before, simply because experience increases chance of success. A company that has a constant inflow of scratched drives would be even better.

Try Seagate recovery services, I hear they have some good success with scratched media
