I attached my seagate hdd to my friend cpu. turned on the cpu and within 2 sec there is a "tupp" sound from the hdd and smoke came out. I turned off the power immediately. I disassembled the PCB from the hdd and came to know that something below where we plug the power cable to hdd has burned. there is lot of valuable information in my drive. I attached a image of the burned area of my PCB. Please help me what to do... :|

My Hard disk details

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB
ST3500418AS
PCB No: 100532367 Rev B

You have 2 options.

1 - Go to a DR company to diagnose your drive and give you a quote.

2 - Try to get a similar PCB and swap ROM (even that might not help, because there might be also other issues, but here ends your DIY options).

It appears that your drive sustained an overvoltage on the +5V supply. There will be a shorted 5V TVS diode and open circuited inductors.

See http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diode_FAQ.html

If you cannot repair your board, then you will need to transfer the EEPROM to a replacement board. The following PCB suppliers include a free transfer service:

http://www.onepcbsolution.com/
http://www.hdd-parts.com/

If you choose to do this yourself, be very careful, as damage to the EEPROM will make data recovery very difficult, if not impossible.

BTW, Seagate's forum has many threads on this subject, so you might like to search through them.

Thank you for your info and reply... I just now noted that the 5v TVS diode is cracked but not burnt. Is there a chance if solider a inductor and change the 5V TVS diode can make the magic to work my drive..??

There is a slight chance that the preamp may have been damaged, but many users at Seagate's forum have done what you propose and have been successful.

BTW, the inductor is intended for noise filtering, so you could replace it with a wire or a blob of solder. Just retest the board for short circuits after doing this. The TVS diode can be removed. The drive will function without it, but you must not overvolt it again as it will no longer have overvoltage protection on the +5V supply. A second overvoltage will probably kill the preamp.

Hi,

Rather than starting a new topic, I'll post my question here hoping that @fzabkar will see it since as I am facing a similar issue.

Indeed, I would like to get a confirmation that my fix will not destroy everything...

The PCB of my Seagate has burned (Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 9YP154-304 JC4B 8035 - PCB ref : 100650117 REV A) ==> as you can see in the attached pics the +5V power is dead.
I've diag the following :
- when plugged to sata power, I get +12V on the big TVS and 0V on the smaller TVS ==> See the 2 red arrows in the pic (multimeter: black on GND, red on right terminal of each TVS).
- I've tested resistance between +5V TVS and +5V power **after** the damage zone (see yellow lines on the picture): 0 Ohms => I understand that PCB is still OK here.

Can you confirm that I can try the following fix : put a 2 small bulbs of solder in place of the 2 burned inductors ?
Maybe it is best to solder a wire directly between the 3 +5V and the TVS ?

In fact, some pics on the net show 2 inductors where some other show only 1 (like here http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/ST ... S_wire.jpg). Does it change anything ?

EDIT: purpose of the fix is temporary (data recovery only).
