Thanks fzabkar. I think i'll just write this one off as practice and wait for another. I appreciate all your help. If I do choose to check the voltage in the future, what you're saying is I need to plug the board into sata power and then take the voltages down from there, correct? Makes sense

Yes. Connect the COMmon probe (black) to circuit ground (eg a screw hole), and the Volts probe (red) to the location being measured.
