Lately, once a week, my computer freeze for about 5 seconds, except for the mouse.
The hard drive doesn't produce any click on that situation, but I'm wondering if it might be it or it could be anything.

Windows 7 - intel core i5

Hi,
There are a number of things it could be.

A few of the things you could look at in no particular order:

Have a look at the motherboard, usually near the CPU. Look for the large electrolytic capacitors and see if any look like they are bulging or leaking. For more info on this issue, google for motherboard capacitors. If these are on the way out, the power to the motherboard is not provided good enough for a stable system.

Also the power supply itself can suffer from this.

You can try swapping out the RAM and see if the problem persists.

what you should do is to keep looking at the windows event log. especially when the issue occurs. It can point you to the problem area. For example if the hard disk is dying you may see lots of IO errors or disk errors.

You can also check the SMART status of the disk.

google for the above things to get clear on how to check and what you are checking.

Cheers

ram issue not hard drive

or display drivers need to be updated

i would also check and see what temp the cpu is running at
and also check your pc for malware issues.

if it was failing your get write error crc this would show in windows right away.

5 seconds once a week? Hardly worth bothering with. Read this article by Fred Langa and perhaps try Nirsoft's WhatIsHang anyway, if you must get to the bottom of it.

I run windows ME and my computer always crashes, freezes and does who knows what... But I just reset and its fine. Can't be bothered to update as I love the OS so much. Old school guy I am... Also most of the viruses and mailware don't support a outdated system.

Ill be honest, I found it difficult to find a way to word the reply without sounding condescending or nasty etc. This is friendly advice observations from real world experience as an IT worker of 20 odd years.

"cant be bothered" is a valid reason, I have many bad practices based around it, so yes I hear you, it is a pain to change OS's. Though it isn't all that bad.

I have never seen "love" and "windows ME" in the same paragraph except when used like "I would LOVE to know why...(inset problem here)"

there are plenty of malware and viruses that target ME, OS fingerprinting works fine for ME. Infact I would go so far as to say impossible to secure. If you are doing any email, banking, internet browsing, I really don't think it is a good idea. You don't need many viruses or malware or exploits - just one.

BTW if you are running ME, I assume your PC is getting on in years. If you are way about performance, Win 7 I have running on some older PCs and it performs not too badly actually. Finding drivers for win 7 should not be too bad.

Anyway, sorry for slicing the topic up and feeding it to the dogs..
