The PCB board on my WD 1tb hard drive shorted when I was upgrading my computer and fried the SATA power connection. I tried a different board to see if it would start up, and it did, but hung when trying to access drive. Is it very easy to find another board for the WD1001FALS hard drive and will this need the ROM chipped switched out for this model?

I have 5 years worth of information that I really need to get back.

Thanks!

@Dale, does your PCB have a chip at location U12, below the Marvell MCU?

http://image.dhgate.com/albu_354856089_ ... -board.jpg

As for the damage, see http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diode_FAQ.html

... and http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/bi ... diodes.jpg

Is it the 5V TVS diode that is damaged, or the 12V diode, or both? If the 5V diode, then the preamp would be suspect.

Can you give a image of the component side of the pcb. It looks like the board is completely messed up by the current that was shorted, Something went very wrong and the drive might be damaged internally.

No external ROM on these as far as I recall.

Of course, if the SA is intact then only WDR will work.

Yes, WDR is available easily.
