I have a Hitachi HDD in my laptop. The model is HTS722020K9SA00.
It is reporting this SMART error:
Reallocated sector count, Status=Fail, Value=1, Worst=1, Threshold=5, Raw Value=0
It seems obvious that the threshold is not exceeded so I wonder if this is somehow being reported in error?
Should the Reallocated sector count threshold be such a low value?
I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Every time I restart the laptop an error pops declaring imminent HDD failure. Windows repeatedly pops a message to backup immediately, which I have done.
The drive is at firmware level DC40C76A. I downloaded and installed the Hitachi drive fitness test software but my drive doesn't show up in it.
The drive self test in Passmark Disk Checkup passes.
Does anyone know if there is there a firmware revision available to correct this problem? Is there a way to reset/correct the SMART counters?
I'd hate to scrap a working drive so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A SMART attribute fails when its normalised value falls below its threshold. That said, it is odd that the raw value is 0.

Thanks for the reply.
Odd that Hitachi's WinDFT doesn't see the drive.
I read that errors could be caused by corrupted firmware. Possible? If so, can it be corrected?
HP has a firmware update that "- Fixes an issue where following error message is displayed after powering ON the laptop: 1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing attr: 0ยค)"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&softwareitem=ob-68852-1
I tried installing it but the install software reported back that my drive didn't need the update. This is why I asked if there was a more updated firmware. I checked the Hitachi website but can't find anything. I emailed Hitachi support but haven't received a reply.

Get another one and carry on, then.

Other solution is to find someone in your area who can professionally refurbish it for a reasonable fee. I am too far , unfortunately.

No, you cannot "reset" by DIY the SMART, you also need to correct the problem. Have to use dedicated tools and , in your case , additional resources and know how.

Thanks for the insight. I'll wait to replace the drive when it fails completely. I just wondered if there might be a simple fix.

If there is a bad head, the drive can be refurbished by disabling that particular head and then recertifying the drive at a lower capacity. But that's what the professional tools are for ...

That said, if you wait for long enough, information eventually leaks out and cheap or "free" tools become available.
