By the way - CTRL+R will "Load Cert" so you will not get those "No VALID Cert Code Detected" errors when trying those commands.

Thanks ;)

Okay, new problem that has me stumped. I decided to load my computer in windows XP to format the drive and partition using the software that works for XP to get more information, but when I open the Putty terminal the drive results are not in English. I get this "fæøfx`f`àøø`fxffæ~àfx`fàffæøææ````æfx```xf~fxfþfàæ~þæfþþ`þ" when it should be:

Reset
4096k x 16 DRAM
GALAXY - 1_Disk S-6D 09-22-06_15:48

Buzz HM SFI

So I decided to load up WinME where it worked fine before, but now that too is messed up. I only get "fæøfx`f`àøø`fxffæ~àfx`fàffæøææ````æfx```xf~fxfþfàæ~þæfþþ`þ" when I turn on the drive. HELP!

Strange, changing the data rate to 4800 did the trick. Not sure whats going on there. Anyway back to the drive. I ran PCCheck on the drive, did a mechanics stress test and that was fine. When I did a destructive write test, putty displayed errors as listed below.

Once question I do have, could a dripped pin on the IDE cable cause this to happen?

Okay, update for all, Now I am really messing with the drive. tried to activate the N4,22 command but nothing happened. Somewhere in the process I messed up the Age of the drive. Made it go to age 4 by mistake, that gave an error on bootup. Not sure how important that was.

Anyway, got it back to Age 50 by using the command N50,,22 so the drive looks normal from terminal. Now preforming another test from this forum http://malthus.zapto.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=299.

Started the test and now the drive is doing a lot of strange stuff.. Lots of writing on terminal and such...

Update,
For some reason, N4,,22 dumps the drive into Age 04 and does nothing... Well no display on the screen.

I am staying well away from N2 commands.

Well, for some reason I can't edit my posts... Umm, anyway, the test I am doing is a N10,,22, I believe I need to run N50,,22 to get the drive back to age 50 to run normally again... Slowly learning...

That Self Scan did not work very well, but more of my programs are able to reconise the drive now. But when I attempt to partition the drive for use, the drive constantly clicks with bad clusters and locks up my system. Any commands I can use on the drive terminal that will scan the drive and add them to the P-List, or some way to move the partition sector away from the damage part of the drive?

Any help would be welcomed.

Shane

I have attached a log of a level 3 self scan which I hope will put the bad sectors and stuff in the P list as stated on the website somewhere above the post. If anyone can pinpoint the problem, I am all ears. I will test the drive later when my kids have finished watching cartoons of my server.

So, managed to make some progress. Whatever self scan level 3 did the drive can now format and partition, but as expected there seems to be bad sectors lurking around. If the bad sectors are on one platter, or perhaps a weak head. Is there any way to find out which platter or head is bad?

I think I have found a way to download Modules using putty commands, will mess around with that later and perhaps backup the files needed to do a level 2 scan.

Also after more tests it does seem like removing a platter or head might work if the damage is limited to one platter.
