Hello Gurus,

I got WD 80GB 3.5 SATA.
Model: WD800JD-00LUA0

Diagnose of the drive showed that the heads are bad, the drive clicks and didn't give any ID.
I checked the PCB with the donor drive and it fully worked so the PCB is good.
I swaped the heads from the donor drive with the patient drive. After the opration I got ready state and full access to the SA.
I backuped the Modules and the service tracks but the drive still show corrupted ID:
Model : WDC ROM MODEL-UNICORN--
Serial : WDC-ROM SN# XYZ----
Firmware : 10.01E03
Capacity : 5.79 GB (12 136 321)

I checked the heads with the heads test function and both heads (0&1) were OK (head 0 little bit slow but not that slow).
I checked the SA structure and the results were good.
I don't have any explnation why the drive keep showing me corrupted ID.

*I recovered rom module 47 and saved it to the drive but it didn't work as well.
* I wrote the patient rom to the donor pcb and tried to use the donor pcb with the rom image (and rom modules) from the patient drive but still the same ID corruption.

Any recommandations how to continue?

Best Regards,

Also XYZ appears when SA can't be read. But on your case you have access to SA modules directly (without using the search function on PC3K UDMA), correct ? So most likely it's some sort of incompatibility of the rom code with module 11.

Yes I have access to the SA directly without the search function on PC3K UDMA.

"Strat by checking ROM with copy of SA to see if version is the same."
There is no rom backup in the SA for that drive.
Is there a version which I can check on the SA and in the ROM image which I can compare to see if the rom is original?
(hope I ask it right).
For example, is there a version like XXXX on the SA which also appear on the ROM image so I can see if the current ROM is match to the SA?

Compare the version number of MOD 0D against MOD 11?

Compare the date code on the drive's label against the date codes on the chips?

Module D0 -> 620C
Module 11 -> 06BBD
Module 01 -> 06BB

Date code on the drive's label -> 26 JUN 2005
Where do I see the date codes on the chips?
(I looked carfully on the pcb but didn't see any specific date. Only the year 2005 but on the board itself and not over the chips)

MOD 0D, not D0.

Can you upload the resources?

Can you upload detailed photos of both sides of the PCB?

Does MOD 02 contain a date?

MOD 0D is near the end of the ROM. I'm not certain, but I think that the version of 0D should match that of MOD 11.

MOD 109 is a ROYL MOD. AIUI, the OP's drive is not a ROYL.

yes, there is DOM as a text field there

correct, for this model. But this is not a universal solution for any WD drive

Also correct

@ OP: Do you hear any strange sounds after drive spin up ?
Do you hear a complete calibration ?

WD's PCBs also have a WWYY date code printed on them.
