OK, before I start, please accept my profuse apologies for starting yet another thread on this manufacturer's products.

OK. I have a 3.0 TB My Book Essentials external HD.

It packed up

Took it out of the enclosure, hooked it up to a 3rd party enclosure and Windows 7 64-bit OS doesn't "see" it. It does, however, appear in Disk Management utility though it says the space is unallocated. It asks me to initialize the disk - I decline the invitation.

Easeus Recovery finds the data but when I try to recover it, it's all in a format (.swf) I can't find a program to open.

Encrypted then.

I'm thinking that if the PCB was kaput then the drive wouldn't spin at all and I wouldn't have been able to get as far as I did with Easeus. I'm also thinking that as the drive spins with no issues whatsoever when powered up, there's no mechanical issue.

The only thing I can think of is the USB-SATA bridge which contains the hardware encryption.



My question is what - EXACTLY- I should be looking for in terms of compatibility with my particular hard drive?

The USB-SATA bridge part number is 4061-705094-001 Rev 13R but I can't find one for love nor money. Will one with a different revision number work? I just don't wanna be buying bits left, right and centre and getting nowhere.

I can see the problem, there is no HDD connected to the PCB!!

.swf is Macromedia, sorry, Adobe flash format. try opening one in internet explorer or flash player .

what data is supposed to be there?

If you are able to see data, then can you install partition find and mount, and take an image of the disk? Having an image, even an encrypted one, is a good safety measure in case the HDD packs up worse, and you can make copies of images and work on them.

is ALL the data in .swf or what exactly do you mean.. can you post a screenshot?

I wouldn't mind seeing what a disk in that condition actually looks like from a data perspective.

What exactly "packed up" It may be easier to fix the enclosure.

Drive is encrypted, use search function on this site....or take it to someone that works with data recovery.

Well duh

Obviously the f***ing drive is encrypted - I've already said that in my opening post if you'd bothered to read it before dispensing your attitude. I used the search function before posting but no one seemed to have the same question which was pretty specific.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. I managed to find the exact part and all my data - 2.02 TB of the finest UK and US TV shows have all been recovered in pristine condition and not a data recovery hack anywhere in sight.

I saw that you were aware of encryption, but what I wanted you to see is that if you bothered to use the search function you would see that this subject have been covered many times before...
Good for you that all data is back, next time you might not be so lucky.
