Hi
I've a WD 2500BEVE with some bad clusters, so I launched hdd regenerator 1.71, but the software recognizes only 127Gb, instead of 250Gb of the drive, while bios and other tools configure the exact capacity- Is it normal?
Thank for the attention
Regards

HD :(

If you keep running HDD Regenerator against your drive, eventually you'll see 0GB.

If your data have not been backed up, then now would be the time to do it. Otherwise, zero-filling your drive should remap any bad sectors.

As for the 127GB issue, it appears that the software is hitting a 28-bit LBA limit.

Thank you, but, fortunately, the drive is formatted , so it doesn't contain datas!

I thought to try a regeneration, before doing a lowlevel format..In any case all bad clusters are in the first 28Gb, while the remaining capacity is OK
A few time ago, I've partitioned the drive (with the first 30Gb unallocated) and installed in it Windows 7 (only for curiosity) and it worked well enough, excluding the usual SMART error , due to HP laptop hdd control , but, pressing F1 , anything was working.
Now the drive is formatted and ready for any kind of test...

P.S. HP refuses too many drives!

If the drive has a SMART error, then the usual reason is that it has too many reallocated sectors, in which case no software tool will be able to recover them.

What does a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo report?

Now I'm at home, while the Pro version of CrystalDisk is in my laboratory.
I already know that there are a lot of reallocated sectors, unfortunately.
The drive is nearly new (the guarantee is overdue last month) , but it stopped working well, suddendly.
In any case, I can use it as external USB disk, utilizing only the good partition (more than 180Gb are in good conditions)

P.S. I've found several NEW HDD , with reallocated sectors !!! I think there are , in commerce, drives of first, second...and third choise.

Are you sure that your usb port are working good?
Usually if the motherboard or the computer power supply don't work good then USB might not work well causing failures to external drives.

Computers that have a bad power supply or motherboard faulty manifest symptoms such as system freezing or unexplained reboots, did you notice these symptoms?

Not at all
My USB ports work well! Besides, very often, I use a 5Volt supplementary PSU..and the mainboard is OK

The drive on the matter seems perfect(without generating crashes or BSODs) , if installed into an USB-IDE interface, obviously, I consider only the right partition of 180GB.

I've several Compaq Evo n620C that I employ for any kind of software tests
These old laptops are very versatile and suitable for these purposes.
I've installed Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate , just on a 620C and anything is perfectly working, included graphic card!!! I've also installed, in another 620c, MAC OS X 4.8 and it's nearly perfect and fast: the only ecception is the right audio channel which is not so good, like the left one! The main difficulty has been in finding a correct driver for the ethenet card, but after some attempts I succeeded in installing the right driver.

I keep on handling this HDD, only because is an ATA drive large sized, therefore more espensive than a SATA hdd!

Regards :D
