Hi all I'm hoping I can get some help in properly troubleshooting my WD My Passport 1TB HDD. I've had it for about a year now and the other day it just stopped connecting properly to my computer. When I connect it the light comes on and blinks and I can hear/feel the drive spinning.

I tried two computers as well as my WD Digital media player which is usually what this is connected to, but none of them showed the drive. It has not suffered any physical damage that I am aware of due to dropping or anything like that. Also when I connect it to my computer I get a sound from the computer that it is connected, but it does not show up as a drive to access.

I'm hoping I could avoid changing the control board via hdd-parts.com, because they say in my case it's a crap shoot, but I'm hoping I may be able to get some solid advice here before buying a new pcb.

Thanks in advance everyone.

It now appears also that if I delete the driver for the HDD from the device manager that the next time I plug it into the computer, the WD Smartware recognizes that it is plugged in but shows no writable partition available. Could this just be that the control board is bad?

No.

So it isn't possible at all that the control board failed? And the drive just crapped out for no reason while it was not in use?

Possible sure, likely not.
Could check out the contacts on the PCB for oxidation and clean them using a pencil eraser. Can search more for this here in the forum.

Would the freezer method work on this for recovering some of the data?

Don't even get us started on that.

How valuable is the data on the drive? It is unlikely that you will have much success on your own and are likely making it worse every time you power it on. These drives are very difficult to work with, even for the pros, for many reasons that I'm not going to get into.

Based on your proximity, I suggest you contact Data-Medics or Data Savers.

Movie and music are replaceable. My biggest concern is the pictures that are on there of my kids.

If you don't want to lose your photos, call a pro before it is too late.
