 Post subject: Refurb a Seagate ST3000DM001 7200.14

Hello all,
I've been given this harddrive with a simple explanation;
It doesn't work anymore.
I don't know how it started failing,how it was used,how old it is... (no warranty anymore anymway)
I do know that the motor spins and there are no weird sounds coming from it, so i figured there might be hope to revive it.
At least a partial revival would be nice,in case there's a weak head or damaged platter.

I found out already that the drive is unresponsive, because at powerup it is busy with InitiateMarkPendingReallocateRequest tasks.
It would be doing this every time it is being powered on. Access through terminal would be possible after about 15-20 minutes of waiting for the tasks to finish.

What i've been trying so far;
Cleared SMART with N1 command, then G-List with i4,1,22
Then did the m0,8,2,,,,,22 command, as data recovery is not needed.
But the formatting is taking 48 hours straight now, did i do something wrong? Or should i abort and try something different?

So the terminal is giving me this for 48 hrs; these messages still keep coming at a rate of 2 per second

I now know that this drive came from a NAS,in which it developed a fault and was replaced...

Did a normal TTL level serial connection work to this drive, or did you need to use lower voltages ?

If you do /A (or /2) and R0,1
does work ie not give an error or does it fail with an error

always run m0,5,1,10,3,,,22 on 7200.14 hdd.

Hi,thanks for your response...about my setup;
I've used a "USB / Serial TTL 5V cable - PL2303HX converter - Raspberry & Arduino"
It is plug&play, as Windows7 downloaded the correct Prolific driver automatically.
The drive is still powered by my PSU though,not by the converter.
It's a really easy setup, but slightly buggy sometimes...when i disconnected a session,there would be a fair chance that i wouldn't be able to connect to anything again. Pulling the converter out of my usb port and plugging it back in solves that issue though, it's not a big deal.

/A or /2 and R0,1 gives a blank line in return,no error..is that good?

yes nothing to do. just scan it to check its sectors, if all sectors ok then install windows and use.

Damn, things went really wrong.
After fixing one failure after another,the drive also starting to exhibit the BSY state.
So i decided to do the well known fix for it. After i executed the spindown, reconnected the data pins and the attempted to spin back up, the drive started beeping...so that meant head stiction :-( ... When i attempted to get them loose,the tip came off of two of the heads... total destruction :-(
What a shame... But i think the heads were dying anyway...Ever since i had the drive,there were more bad than good sectors to be seen.
I'm really wondering though,if the last formatting session would have improved things! But we will never know...
waqas_ali766,can i return the favor by asking if you want the PCB? Perhaps you can use it?

Hello. I'm From Brazil, and recently my HDD 1TB Barracuda 7200.14 stopped, no longer recognizes in the BIOS.
I found some methods to fix the busy/BSY state, but for 7200.11 models. So, looking on Google, I found this forum.

Someone here has managed to recover an HDD with 7200.14 firmware, using the procedures of TTL?
What are the correct commands (I've seen one of them changes, but the rest would be the same?).

if your data is important for you
so don't try to learn repair in your HDD
and go to pro in DR
