Hi there!
I have a patient drive wich has dropped while it was powered.
After a head swap, the drive was identified fine with some strange beeping noise, and read some data, but there was so many CRC errors. (I use Atola Insight)
The terminal window post is:

Then i cleared the smart with i4,1,22 command, reconstruct the translator with m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22, and now the terminal post this, and the drive stays BUSY:

Dropped while powered on = some sort of physical media damage.
Nobody can fix media damage, BUT try to work around it as much as possible.

Hello,
The m0,2,2,,,,,22 is very dangerous for 7200.14 hard disk, specially if you need DATA from the drive.
If you run this command in OK working hard disk then it will destroy its translator and in return hdd not detect any more and shows a alot of bad sector.

FAIL Op=0165 Resp=0005 ============> This error means Head failling to read, and hdd give you little noise.

Starting LBA of RW Request=00033798 Length=000004EC ============> Read write fail at 33798 LBA (LBA is in hex)

Reconstruction Fail: Burly Case ====== ?

MCMainPOR: MCTBufferPtr->Header.MCStateFlagsDisc = 00001001

MCMainPOR: MCTBufferPtr->Header.MCTStateFlags = 0000002A

MCMainPOR: MCStateFlags = 00001001

No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 0002A1E1 ============> failed to read firmware in simple words. If this msg appear then you need to use m0,2,2,,,,,22 command other wise not use this in 7200.14 series.
FAIL Op=0555 Resp=0005
FAIL Op=0065 Resp=0005
FAIL Op=0555 Resp=0005
FAIL Op=0065 Resp=0005

Solution

Follow these steps
1. power on and wait terminal log
2. when you power on you see spin up message in terminal. and after hdd calibrating complete you see spin up message again,
short read channel points immediately and remains shorted until it start giving message like unknown type or like this (No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 0002A1E1)

3. IF it show after few minutes (No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 0002A1E1) then use m0,2,2,,,,,22 then clear smart and reset power. and if it shows alot of error like QV qv qv qvqv qvq vqvq vqvq then don't worry just power off and on it will auto calculate translator bulk capacity and auto remove BULK error.

4. use congen to stop relocation of bad sector and disable smart
F00A2,00,22
F01E4,00,22
F057C,043C,22
these command work on level T .
clear smart

problem solved

Maybe the platter got damaged/scratched.
Did you try to reverse clone or clone from the end to the start if Atola have that option ?
Also did you check the platters for damage ? You might end up damaging the heads when they reach the bad area of the platter.
Do you have module access ? Can you copy modules or tracks ?

First, thanks for the answer, and your questions!
The Atola Insight can imaging reverse, and is tried it, with o success.
While head swap i can only see the top platter, and there was some scratch under the parking ramp at the outer area of the platter.
...and i don' have tool for acces to SA modules, and as i know the Sediv coud not be access to these drives :-(

Thank you Ali, i will try it tomorrow.

Are these the read channel test points that i have to short after the drive spins up?

I think there ar some bad sectors while reading FW.
So the conclusion is the System Area is damaged after the drive was dropped while it is powered :-(

Does the drive identify with correct capacity?

Yes, and can read smart data, and it's identified as: ST2000DL003-9VT166 / 5YD5TH47

When i would like to read ANY sector, the terminal sends: ProcessRWError -Read- at LBA 00F8C514 Sense Code=C4090082

I don't know is it important, but the PCB board is not the original one. The original PCB board has SH6968 motor controller chip, and now the assembled PCB board has a Smooth controller chip. I think this is not so important in this case.

The media seems damaged/deteriorated based on the errors posted.
BUT more concerning is your statement of PCB not being original. If this is the case, do you have the drive's native/original ROM?
Or probably you mean, the PCB you are currently testing the drive with (current mounted PCB on the drive at the time these tests were ran) is not the original?!?

Yes of course, the ROM is the drive's original ROM, and it's sits on the head stack donor's PCB. The original PCB has a short circuit, and does not spins up the drive.
I the past with another head stack, the drive was accessible, and after so many reading errors the Atola Insight restarted the drive, and it was no more identified still i made another head swap. The drive was readble with errors, and after i did m0,2,2,,,,,22 command, then the drive was stays busy with so many terminal errors.
Then shorted the read channel test points with m0,2,2,,,,,22 command, and now the drive works, but does not access any sectors.
When i start the drive, the terminal window says this:

...and the donor drive had a same FW (CC45) and site code (WU)
The PCB printed number also was the same, but the motor controler chip is different. I think it's does not matter.

ok, your posts make a whole lot more sense now that you provided so much more info.
I doubt that you will make more progress on this drive going forward, but some things to check are:
1) that the reallocation was actually disabled (sometimes this does not happen despite issuing the commands to do so)
2) translator is good
3) build heads map and check LBA access per each head manually

P.S. I believe that whoever had this drive (owner maybe) kept powering the snut out of that drive after being dropped, which in my interpretation caused heads damage, media damage, and in attempt to read anything the PCB got blown = worst situation ever for customer and for those trying to recover the daters. Waste of time, money and nerves. Only a bit of common sense and refrain can go a long way on behalf of the customer. Sad.

Best wishes

Thank You labtech!
I have one new error message:
While imaging with Atola, and pushing the "Next Head" button that force the drive to read from the next head, the "Error reading head configuration from the disk." message appear on the Atola window, and the imaging is stops. So i think the head map is corrupt.

The "m0,2,2,,,,,22" command did not solved this problem, but since i was used this command first time in this driive, then all sectors are gone.

The head test now shows this:
F3 7>X

FAIL Op=0555 Resp=0005
Head 00 Resistance 0105
Head 01 Resistance 00FE
Head 02 Resistance 0108
Head 03 Resistance 0129
Head 04 Resistance 00F5
Head 05 Resistance 0104

With V40 and V1 command i can read the G-List, and translator from the SA with no error.

Hello,
Now if your drive access firmware and not gives access to user area , follow this
m0,2,2,,,,,22
/1
N1
power reset
/t
F00A2,00,22
F014E,00,22
F057C,043C,22
power reset
these three commands are used to disable smart and auto relocation.

now all sectors Access easily..

Software is just a plate form to diagnose a hard disk. main thing is your mind which give you idea to perform several tricks to repair hdd.

Hello,
After use of m0,2,2,,,,,22 command always use clear smart, other wise all sector goes inaccessible.

If terminal shows this error (ProcessRWError -Read- at LBA 00F8C514 Sense Code=C4090082) then not worry about that, it is auto relocation system by firmware.
if you have any cloning tools like pc3000 and MRT try to disable smart option and try to clone the hdd with OK heads.

Thanks
