Hi all, this is my first post here, I'm a PC repairer and today a client gave me 2 WD5000AAKS that suddently stop working. Together! I suspect a problem with the PSU. Testing with a multimeter I have 5V input.

Now, I tried to connect but I can't hear nothing. Bios doesn't recognize it. Seems dead. So, I want try to change the PCB with a new one. I read here that this isn't a good solution due to ROM and other problems. Someone can help me? Sorry for my bad English, I'm not so good with it

Il punto non è che non sia una buona soluzione sostituire la pcb (anzi in questo caso andrebbe proprio sostituita), il fatto è che non è sufficiente.
Oltre a sostituire la pcb bisogna trasferire la rom dalla pcb guasta alla pcb donatrice.

Hai gli strumenti per trasferire la rom?
Se la rom è esterna allora è sufficiente un programmatore eprom per trasferirla.
Se la rom invece dovesse essere agglomerata nella MCU, allora servirebbero dei tool specifici di recupero dati per poterla trasferire.

Posta possibilmente le foto di entrambe le pcb (lato componenti) così potremmo capire che tipo di rom montano.

Vista la tua risposta nella mia lingua, presumo non sia un problema parlare in "doppia lingua". Comunque, dipende. SE intendi dissaldare e risaldare un chip sì, il resto non credo proprio di averlo visto che si parla di tool specifici. Domani posto delle foto della PCB fronte\retro. Grazie per la risposta.

Se la rom è esterna (cioè se si trova in un chip SO-8) puoi usare la stazione saldante a getto d'aria per trasferire fisicamente il chip sulla pcb donatrice, oppure puoi utilizzare il programmatore eprom per leggere la rom dalla pcb guasta per poi andare a scriverla nella rom della pcb donatrice sempre col programmatore.

Se invece la rom si trova nella MCU (cioè il grosso chip al centro della pcb che ha decine di pin) allora non sarà possibile trasferirla ne con il saldatore ne con la eprom, ti servirà un tool specifico come PC3000 o HD Doctor per ricostruire gli adaptives rom.

Yes Nesa, I don't know if I need to test 12V on PSU or on the PCB. Usually I don't need it, as you surely know. Assuming that I need to misure it on hdd PCB, I found only 5V. I'm sorry if I'm learning something about this new problem that never happened to me. So, you can give me some help, or only critics? Thank you anyway.


@michael chiklis : Ti ho fatto delle foto alla PCB fronte\retro e le ho caricate su dropbox per comodità. Magari ne sai più di me. Ma a quanto pare la cosa diventa poco conveniente, non tanto per il fatto di dover dissaldare\saldare un chip, ma per l'aspetto della programmazione dello stesso, per il quale non ho strumenti adeguati. In ogni caso, ormai è una questione di principio, e nella peggiore delle ipotesi imparo qualcosa di nuovo. Certo, non saprò dove misurare una 12V, ma sto imparando anche quell'aspetto dell'elettronica. Grazie ancora.

La pcb non ha un chip rom dedicato, ciò significa che la rom è salvata all'interno del microcontrollore (cioè nella MCU 88i6745-TFJ1).
Ciò significa che una volta sostituita la pcb bisognerà ricreare gli adaptives rom con strumenti professionali, io posso farlo ma dovresti inviarmi l'intero hdd.

Da una delle foto che hai postato sembra che sia bruciato il controller VCM e un condensatore (ho cerchiato in rosso i punti in cui sembrano esserci i segni di bruciatura).

Your question aka "big problem" is tipical and one of the many of them in this forum and in such cases mostly members say there is a "search" button for that. Maybe that is the reason you have no response to a request. Answer certainly exists in this forum. Be curious as we are.
In addition it is difficult to be part of the discussion that has already begun and is kept in strange/incomprehensible language.

Yes my friend, I'm sorry for the strange language. Micheal explained me that I need a professional tool to recreate\adapt the firmware on the new PCB. Some components on the old PCB are gone\burn. This is the TL;DR. I know that I can do a search here to find some interesting thread, but onestly, this is my first case of an HDD with this problem, and I tried to ask directly. Maybe is not a good behavior, I know.

Your problem began when you decided to take on work you do not know how to do. With the experience you are showing to NOT have, it is very disturbing you are talking about customer drives. If these were your own, then no problem, learn a bit, risk a bit.. If I were to be in the customers shoes, I would be disappointed that your actions were this, instead of referring to a Data Recovery Business.

Additionally you are spending time that is better aimed at the things you know. Most Computer shops I know are too busy to be wasting many hours on a job that is not going to give much probable money back.

Much better to outsource to a DR Shop. And one last thing. The risk to the customers data. Have you told the customer you do not know DR, and the associated risks?

I hope you see this is not a personal attack, but I want you to think about it. I bet you have the best intentions, but good intentions don't always provide good results. Messing up a drive can harm your business, and that has to be considered.

Thank you for your response HaQue. I don't want to do nothing now that some of you explained me the real difficult of this action. My initial idea was to only change the PCB, but this forum saved me (and the costumer too). Now, I contacted Micheal, that is from my nation, to send him the drives. I'm sorry if my thread disturb someone, didn't know how many hours of work, how many patience and experience needed to solve this problem. I respect many professionist as Reballer, DR and other.
