I have one of these, which I extracted from a GoVault drive thing (it's an interchangable cartridge backup system) and it appears to be flashed with some kind of custom firmware.
When I plug it in, at boot, it detects the correct brand and model number but says that the SMART is bad, and in Windows, it detects it in a similar way (without the SMART shit) but it says it's not allocated (but has detected the correct size of 300GB).
When I try to allocate it, I get some kind of I/O error (my Windows is in french...) and in the end, it is not allocated.

If you want the data recovered, you will need the services of a data recovery pro, like me. :D If you don't care about the data, buy a new drive that you can trust.

I can get the data back if I want to, but I don't want that data, I just want to use it as a normal HDD

Can you show us the SMART report? You could use a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... dex-e.html

Could you also show us the contents of sector 0? You could a disc editor such as DMDE (freeware).

A little bit of cheating has allowed me to see the sector 0.

The SMART data look excellent, so on that basis there appears to be nothing wrong with your drive. However, that is not consistent with the I/O error in DMDE.

That said, your subsequent screenshot of LBA 0 shows a boot sector for an NTFS logical volume. It does not show a typical MBR and partition table.

The capacity of the volume is 0x2542E6AF sectors which corresponds to 320GB.

0x2542E6AF x 512 = 320 072 408 576

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x2542E6 ... in+decimal

Offset 0x1C has a value of 0 which means that the first sector of the NTFS volume coincides with the first sector of the physical drive. This explains why Windows is confused. That is, Windows is trying to interpret sector 0 as an MBR rather than as a boot sector, so of course it cannot make any sense of it.

If you want the data recovered, you will need to edit those bytes between 0x1BE - 0x1FD. This is a relatively simple thing to do, assuming that the drive doesn't have serious physical problems. Let me know if you wish to do this. Otherwise just zero-fill your drive and scan it with a tool such as MHDD.

Here is a typical Windows XP NTFS boot sector:

... and here is an explanation of its structure:

Here is a typical Windows XP MBR and an explanation of its structure:

I can get the data, but as I said, I want this as a regular HDD instead of a "super floppy" as it is right now.

Then zero-fill your drive and scan it with a tool such as MHDD. This will identify any "slow" sectors.

So, I'm going to guess that it is the ERASE command, but I ran into a few problems: The first: my laptop at boot tells me that there is an ATA password, and when I do ERASE, the BUSY light is on, but no HDD activity. On my main PC, it's telling me that the HDD is bad and then it doesn't do anything. (using /DISABLEBIOS is the same.)

Hello,

I think, you will need to fix this with appropriate firmware, because you extract this drive from backup cartridge.
Try to work in this way

That's what I thought, because even 0ing it in the cartridge reader doesn't change it
