Recently my computer suffered a mobo failure, it was an alienware x51 so there was a limited amount of things I could do with it so I made the decision to toss the pc case and damaged mobo, my friend misunderstood what I meant to dispose of and took it upon himself to pry open the case of the hard drive and bend the platters with a pair of vise grips.

I was wondering if it was possible to unbend the platter sufficiently to repair the drive.

It was a WD 1TB single platter, about 40% of the platter is bent the other 60% is pristine other than the drive being opened.

He is convinced that the platter can be unwarped to perfect condition because most of the platter is undamaged. I'm pretty sure he is full of it from what i've read.

I will take this as a serious question, as I am sure some will doubt it. I have seen many, ah, interesting things that people do, and this isnt even half as bizzare.

You would have more luck swapping the horns from a Unicorn for a Time machine, and going back in time to grab the vice grips off your freind and bopping him on the head with them.

In short 0 chance of anything.

Well alot of times it is a simple misunderstanding. if he thought that you werent going to recover data, then making the data totally unrecoverable is actually sensible, and in that context something a good friend might do, for your security.

Well his theory after he found out that with enough weight and a flat surface the platter would flatten into readable shape.
I had no intention of dropping 4 figures to recover the data even if it was possible, but I just needed a second opinion to refute his crazy theory.

Even if you are willing to spend more than 5 figures it would still be 99.99% no chance of recovery.

There are plenty of labs that boast 99% success rates. I recommend sending to one of them.

Well, if you decide to make a contract with Kyubey - - you can have one wish granted in exchange for your soul (and your life as well); but I bet you he will be able to return the drive to a working condition and get all of your data out of it.

I don't think this post is *real* but if so unless some extreme measures are used like time traveling or magic I would say the data is unrecoverable.

No real posiblilities to recover data here.
