I have just had in a WD20NMVW. Its a WD Passport with integral USB/PCB. I have a PC3K and DDI (without USB add-on). It spins up and stays up for about a minute and restarts, so it could be head failure but ideally I want to get it onto the PC3K first to take a look. Is there any way to convert the USB board to accept a SATA connection?

You probably already knew about connecting this drive via the Toshiba terminal but forgot. Don't worry I'm sure it happens to all pro's.

No I didn't know you could do that, but thanks. I thought the PC3K didn't handle USB like SATA due to the language differences. I'll keep trying to feed you these opportunities while I can

Its right on the forum, you don't need to contact Ace. There is even a "sticky" post right at the beginning since 2011.

Are you talking about the Deepspar forum or Ace Labs. I cannot see the sticky on the Ace Forum?? Sorry.

If I were you the first thing I would do would be to convert it to SATA, takes 2 minutes (if you have the correct PCB match). Been doing it all week... sigh. Shrek, damn you.

I did find reference to this on the deepspar forum and have ordered a board. Many thanks.

Would be really grateful if you could give me a little more info on this.

I have a WD20NMVW-11AV3S2 that I need to convert to SATA in order to try and dump the drive.

Go easy on a the noob ;)

I believe the SATA board you need is 2060-771959 which you should easily find on ebay. Then you can transfer the U12 ROM chip from the USB board to the SATA one. (Hot air works best, but be careful not to overheat it or you're really screwed)

However keep in mind that the data will be encrypted since the USB board has an encryption chip that the SATA board does not. If you get a good clone of the data you might be able to use a My Book USB bridge board for to decrypt the data. I'm not exactly sure which one, probably board number 4061-705094-001.

Keep in mind that you need to clone the very end of the drive to decrypt as the encryption key is stored in a sector near the very end. Otherwise you'll need PC-3000 to extract the backup key from the service area and software decrypt the data.

Hopefully that helps.
