I really don't know if cooling the drive will help, maybe you have to turn off smart activity in some how...

reset SMART needed. But continue cooling disk with dyson fan, refrigerate drive is safer for the drive.

If you want i can check in remote the smart status and reset it in case is needed.
To do this job you have to connect the drive directly to the motherboard via sata connection.

Also you need WDR demo version + Teamviewer for remote control.

Hi Michael & hhddrec,

I could save some data yesterday. used the fan to cool it down. WDSmartware, acted as I thought. after 4 minutes it turned off the disk. I let you imagine how it was. Plug usb cable, wait the drive to be recognized by WDSW, type PW, open directories, cut + paste. Stop operations as 4 minutes time is at the end, unplug usb cable. wait a few second that WDSW has noticed that the drive is not anymore connected. and here we go again and again and again.
This morning it worked on first attempt, but on second one not anymore. WDSW notice the connection, prompt for PW, but then don't see the partition. I believe it a problem of temperature here in the room. But I can't cool it down right now. I will try later.
I need WDsmartware, as I have to type my PW in order to access to the data, I can't disable it. (or I m wrong?).

Cut and past? :?

Why you cut and past?
It's better if you do copy and past

I don't think you are doing things right...

Can you show us smart status with some tool as HD Tune, post here the 'health' screen from HD Tune.
Don't install it on your faulty drive, install HD Tune on your good system drive.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Don't play with HD Tune, just ho on 'health' and take a picture by pressing STAMP on the keyboard, then open paint and press CTRL+V

Yes Cut&Paste,

why don't you like this way?
- I have to pay attention that the size of the data don't exceed the time left for transfer (less than 4 min). I lost 2 files like that yesterday, as when WDSW shut down the disk, the file that is currently been cut&paste get lost. Those before this file, are not lost neighter those after.
- It has the advantage to avoid to copy&paste 2-3 times the same groups of files.
For those which I was able to save yesterday, data are working. :D

But you probably see it from another point a view, I would be very interested to know it. thx

Cordiali saluti

That's what i'm talking about.
You might lose the 'cutted' folders if data transfer get interrupted before pasting operation ends.

You are doing wrong, if you really want your data take the drive to a pro.

I believe the source is not deleted until the paste has been successfully completed, so no risk of loss if the process is interrupted.

Maybe HD Sentinel is better for external drive detection, try it.

Are you sure?
Do cut and past of some folders on your drive, interrupt the process before it finish, then tell me if you still see all not pasted folders on source drive.

my apologize for my wrong explain, I do not cut&paste folders, only files. So yes if you cut&paste folders it will kill data if they are not saved on time.

I downloaded hd tune pro 5.50, it cames with two soft HD tune pro and HD tune pro drive status. But my disk don't have the same behaviour as yesterday. Yesterday once my PW was given, WDSW gave me the info of the partition and then I had 2-3 minutes to navigates in the folders and save some of them. Today, once I have given my pw. WD Partition is not recognized. Windows has a popup informing "automatic execute", where I have the choice between open folders or make a backup, and after 1-2 minutes when the disk appear finaly, the disk shut down.

Only hd tune pro drive status showed the drive shortly.

I forgot to mention:
- WDsmartware software ask to make an update, to which I refuse (at least during time of saving the data)
- when I connect the drive to usb port, I hear the drive starting to spin. I see the led blinking too

I have never had this happen to me, even with an interrupted cut-and-paste. Could it be that Windows thinks that the transfer has completed when it hasn't? If so, try disabling write behind caching, or optimise your USB device for quick removal.

P.S.
Sorry, that i marked with red circle is for another drive, right?

Maybe even HD Sentinel is not able to access to smart from external drive, or smart is damaged

Agreed. HD Tune tries to communicate with the drive behind the USB-SATA bridge. If it fails, it then displays whatever is reported by the bridge.

CrystalDiskInfo (freeware) is another good tool, as is smartctl (smartmontools) for Linux.
