The HDD for our company that carries quite a bit of data went down.

Bios stopped recognizing and we researched, etc.

Passed spin up and spin down.
went through the entire process and the m0,2,2,,,,,22 command left me with a string of repeating errors.

Hooked it up againand it started clicking - something it hadn't done before.

Popped the top just to take a peek and noticed a small 1/8th inch scratch on the top platter. Applyed power just to observe spin up and when the head moves it squeals like crazy.

CLosed it back up and now here it sits on my desk.....Need some HELP!!!

Well, you opened your HDD... If you opened it in dirty enviroment (not super clean) then you will probably have big problem + that small scratch is even bigger problem. Then you used dangerous (for 7200.12 HDDs, there are LOTs of threads where guys say that it is dangerous) m0,2,2,,,,,22 command. Take it to DR Pro before you destroy it completely (or already destroyed ), but I think this is going to be expensive.

environment was clean, so no worries there.

m0 command was never able to run as the drive quickly threw an error code and was part of modified instructions for this particular case.

I think there is still hope for this drive.

Just need some alternative advice.

Ok here is the log from spin up and spin down.

This was previously successful.

But the final spin up where the error occurred is paired with some high pitched squeal sounds....not clicking, but squeaking/squealing as the drive attempts to spin.

A good think to know is: "how and when did platter get scratch?"

As of right now that is no issue.....The imperfection or scratch or whatever it is was on the platter when it was opened up.

Need to get two files and a folder off of this thing....

If scratch was on platter before opening it then means that something happened when the drive was running.
Maybe it was bumped while running or there were excessive vibration, or power supply issue which has reduced rotation speed and consequently less air flow that has made touch heads on platters, or simply heads got faulty.
However very likely now heads are faulty and need to be replaced, hoping that new heads set don't get damaged right away because of that scratch.

You know why it squeals? It's because the platters get's more scratched...
It's end of DIY, expect very high cost for recover data from that drive.

No it was not clean. Recently someone posted some info about the size of particles that can damage a HDD. As the head flies over the disc around the same height as smoke particles, and bigger and you can get damage. You say the environment was clean. I don't know what that means but if not in a proper clean chamber, then I don't think it was clean *enough*

Why do I know it was not clean? because when the disc was scratched, it created particles. A very good DR Lab might be able to do a partial recovery. As stated, no DIY options here that I can see. I hope you can get some good results from them.
