I have downloaded the latest WipeMyDisks1.1 and unzipped it to a .img file. However both Windows7 & ImgBurn say the format is incorrect. Why is this?

Thanks, I have written the image to a thumb drive (USB stick) using Linux dd and set the computer to boot from USB hard drive and it has booted OK.
However it only gives the option to wipe all disks or none. It would be better if you could select the disks to be wiped.

well, unplug all disks you don't want to process, then boot.

I knew that but to save taking off the covers, I tried disabling the other drives in BIOS and that didn't help.

IMHO, disabling in BIOS then restarting would take me longer than to start by opening and pulling cables

imho software selection for each drive would actually be a worse option.

It is all too easy to point and click and get the wrong drive, as we see fairly regularly in forum.

This way forces you into checking and connecting physically any drives that require wiping, and turns your PC temporarily into what most pro's will use: dedicated hardware.

IMHO we use IMHO too often I agree with kern.. too easy to choose the wrong one, I noticed in clonezilla for example, the way you differentiate between 2 drives of same type and model is by serial number. You have to pop the lid to check it anyway.

I disconnected the hard drive that I wished to keep intact and booted from wipemydisks on a USB stick. After about 90 mins it said it had wiped the 300Gb disk.
However, Gparted says the disk has only 265Gb and Accessories/Disks says it has 285Gb. Which is right and why do I not get full capacity?

The drive is a Maxtor GB300S0 part no: 683005006611A. Maxtor is now part of Seagate.
What is DMDE ?

You need to understand the difference between Gb, GB, and GiB.

Rather than "GB300S0", do you mean "6B300S0"?
