Hi,

After a long travel (more than 12H in august) under the sun of spain in the back of a car, my HDD has been made unaccessible:
- "NoTPM or TPM has problem" message can be read when it starts,
- the HDD is not visible in the BIOS (in SATA or IDE),
- it spins until the end of the starting process of Lubuntu (Live USB key of ubuntu).

What can I do ?
- loading SATA drivers at starting ? how ? (I tried but without any success)
- reinstall firmware ? how ? I have read (I don't remember where) that the firmware of the WD1600BEVT-22ZCT0 is partly installed at the beginning of the HDD.

The idea I have:
1. By a cable USB/SATA, I connect my WD1600BEVT and I make a low level copy with a tool like dd or ddrescue (gnu) on an external HDD,
2. A friend has the same laptop, so I may make a low level copy of his HDD on mine connected by USB (in order to copy the firmware),
3. Replace mine on SATA connector and format it again,
4. Copy my WD1600BEVT backup (except the firmware part which is damaged).

Is it possible ?

or is there another solution ?

Thanks in advance.
Bob

Hi Bob;
The most probably fail here is FW corruption.
you can try to clone HDD with ddrescue but if you can not see it on BIOS i think you can not clone HDD.

What are your skills and tools, because i think is not for Do it yourself. you need special tools and skills.

Even if it is connected by a SATA/USB cable ?

I am a computer engineer (software development and admin sys a long time ago) but it's the first time I meet this problem.
I do not have particular tools for this task.

si no lo ves en la BIOS no creo que funcione, pero prueba a interntar clonarlo.
if you can not see it on BIOS probably not but you can try it
