Dear experts,

Could anyone tell us if he succeed a head replacement for a Samsung Momentus ST1000LM0024 drive.

PC3000 support told me that it's very difficult to find a donor drive for head replacement.

Should I match the 3 first characters form the serial number?

Thanks in advance for your help

That's the rule for a Seagate. I don't believe it applies to a Samsung HDD.

See http://www.donordrives.com/hard-drive-pcb-donor-match

What did Ace Lab suggest?

Hello,

Thank you very much for your reply.

They said that I have to mach :

1. Full Model Number. Example: ST1000LM0024
2. Site Code. Example: TK, AMK, KRATSG, WUXISG
3. Full part number or first 3 characters in serial number. Example: 9Y7389-301, 9JU138-302, 5MA84KC2, 9ND29XWG
4. Firmware. Example: CC44, 0005HPM1

It's the same parameters as http://www.donordrives.com/hard-drive-pcb-donor-match

They said also that it succeed in 20% of cases ONLY because it's very difficult to match a donor forthe Momentus family HDD.

That's wrong, those criteria are Seagate related. As fzabkar said, these are Samsung drives.

You have PM.

Thank you very much for you help.

But I'm confused. It's a Samsung drive but the family is Momentus (Seagate drive) and the Model number seems to be a Seagate model (STXXXXXX)

Should I refer to Seagate conditions or Samsung conditions to choose a donor drive.

Check the part number, PCB, serial number, firmware version. Any of these will distinguish a Seagate from a rebadged Samsung.

The PCB is a dead giveaway.

We replace heads in these without undue difficulty.

I'd take a hard look at the P/N and the first part of the S/N for head matching.

It's a Samsung drive despite of the label. Seagate acquired part of the Samsung's magnetic media division, that's the reason you see mixed Seagate and Samsung drives.

We've successfully replaced heads for these drives; the main problem is to find preamp compatibility (you can tell this from the terminal log), and the other thing is the poor quality of the heads they come with, or maybe the overall quality of the drive, that may bring problems when imaging the data.
