We have done research and development process for Unstick tool for WD 2.5'' drives some time ago.
And we have made functional prototype. However there is one big problem which we haven't succeeded to overcome so far.
As I have said, tool is functional, as it unsticks heads from the platters, however it's first (or last) snout (which is for head 0) is to too thin to be safe for constant use. It is thin because of the salience in WD 2.5'' casing (see picture below, I have marked this salience with red elipse). Because of this tenuity of one snout of the tool, we still consider this tool unsafe for use. We are thinking about solution for this problem over a year, and there were many ideas - from different material, special construction of last snout or some shape changes of the tool itself, however problem is still not solved.
There is another problem with space which is available for tool extraction after heads are safely moved from the platters to the ramp. Space is limited because of another salience in the casing (see picture bellow I have marked it with yellow elipse). However, this problem most likely can be solved with different design of the tool.
So Western Digital made us some problems with its casing design and that is something on which we can't influence however we can try to solve the issue.
And we still love our job.
