Hello HDDGuru Forums! I recently received 20-30 Dell PowerVault Removable disk cartridges for RD1000 Drives. I'm interested in removing the drives from their enclosures so that I may re-use the 1 TB Toshiba drives inside (model #: MQ01ABD1000). Unfortunately the drives appear to be locked and have their security enabled. I have tried using parted magic's Secure Erase's GUI to disable security but was unsuccessful.

I don't know what the password could be, so I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do. I apologize if this is a common question asked around here, I tried to do some searching in the forums but couldn't find much related to my problem.

I appreciate any assistance, thanks.

I have a new(1 year old) Dell Server that was fitted with these as well, and I was led to believe it was storage, not backup. I am interested in this as well.. I heard this come up a little while ago, I think on these forums, but I cant recall a solution and I never followed it up. I think I remember reading somewhere that whoever was talking about it said it want feasible/possible/or worth it... but It may have changed.

Everything points to an embedded Linux running on the RD1000 unit and custom firmware for the drives

Hmm that's unfortunate, I don't really have access to one of those...

I appreciate the offer, unfortunately I am unable to send out the drives. I guess I'll have to look around some more and try some other methods.

Find a local data recovery company to unlock them for you. It takes specialized equipment like PC-3000 if there is a hardware lock code on them.

And FYI, you wouldn't want to hire DataPlanet. That guy is CRAZY and would probably hold your drives hostage. (Really, I'm not kidding. I don't know why they haven't kicked him off this forum yet he's a complete scammer).

If you tell us where you are I might be able to recommend a local place that can do it.

Thanks for the advice on DataPlanet, haha. I'm posting here because these drives are at my workplace, and unfortunately we can't let them leave our facility.

We might be interested in acquiring a PC-3000 however. Without knowing how to use the device beforehand, how difficult would it be to remove the lock code?

Well my situation is no different so not having one is not the problem ;)

I don't think this is as simple as just unlocking them. I believe they have custom firmware. Last time I researched I did a fair bit of looking and didn't see any solutions, but plenty of people wanting to do it.

IMHO these days, more trouble that it is worth given the end result, unless:
a) The drives are already in your possession and are not useful anyway unless restrictions are lifted,
or
b) You are not the person to figure it out but can simply find the info for the fix online and easily apply it.
