Hey everyone!

Well, I ruined a pair of hard drives, because I accidentally shorted the 5v line in a SATA molex, so both hard drives are unresponsive...

In this topic, I'm gonna be asking about my HDD, is a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001, Firmware is CCG4, PCB 100664987 REV B, it looks like the drive does not receive any power and wont spin up.

I've heard that even if I get a replacement PCB I have to get some info from a EPROM from the old board to make the HDD work with the new one.

Problem is, the PCB cost me like 90% of the value of a new drive, which I could search for an identical firmware and PCB revision match to try my luck, could that possibly work?

I've been checking the PCB as much as possible for me (I don't really know much about electronics, but I try), and have identified 2 possible problems in the PCB, 1 seems to be some kind of coil, which seems to be busted, and the other one is a like a PIC, seems to be physically damaged, but can't tell by myself, will mark the affected components in a pic.







Any help will be appreciated.

The burnt chip is a buck regulator whereas a PIC is a microcontroller. These are completely different animals.

Assuming the only other problem is a shorted 5V TVS diode or open zero-ohm resistor, then a good tech would be able to repair the PCB for less than $10 in parts. Without meaning any disrespect, ISTM that your only realistic solution would be to swap the board and transfer the serial flash memory IC.

the circuit gives continuity in the 5v TVS, even if I remove the diode still gives continuity, the diode seems to be ok, I desoldered that specific one to test it, and it seems its ok, the zero ohm resistors seems to be ok too...

The buck regulator may be shorted to ground.

Please read the thread all the way to the end, as there were a few hiccups along the way.

BTW, the Vcore voltages are around 0.95V - 1.0V, not 1.8V.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to fix the board. It has been my experience that you replace one thing to find that something else is toast too. It is just a heck of a lot easier to move the eprom from the bad board to a known good board.

Edit: Then copy the data off this drive and onto another brand of drive before this one has a fatal head crash, without warning.

YOU NEED SKILLS WITH IRON AND REPLACEMENT PCB.

Do I have to use the exactly same board revision?

I asked about the PCB being the same revision, as I have a 100664987 REV C from another drive, if the BIOS swap is possible, I have a friend who can do it.

About that web page, I've already checked their prices, and I was thinking on getting one, but 1st, I would really like to try to repair it right here or get a similar board ASAP, I have like 4 WIM images I really need to rescue, and some photos... which are my girlfriend's travel stuff
