I plan to start a data recovery business in 2015 but im still learning and practicing all that stuff at the moment.

I have a few questions, any advice is appreciated.

1. If I want to buy the tools like the platter removal tool or things like that, is ebay the best place to find most data recovery tools or you would suggest to me some other supplier?

2. Any good data duplicater device that can skip bad sector that I could get for under 2000$ ?

3. What are the price for the PC-3000 tool, like their standard product ( the udma I think?). And is it only purchasable from the company website or there is reseller from which I could get a better price or just buy it used.

4. Ive hear on the web that it is required to have a real clean room in order to open storage devices and some others mentioned that you can only use a Work Flow Benche and be careful to avoid dust getting in the drive. What do you think about it?

Sounds like you need to do more research before stepping into a data recovery business. A few emails and web searches could easily answer all your questions.

Thanks for your reply, I understand I can get answers on the web but I am asking here on this forum so people who have expertise in this field can give me their valuable advice or opinion. Isnt it the point to ask questions in a forum.

For example , i know there is a lot of data duplicator device but how can I know which one would be a good investment for the money?

A: EBay is a great place to dump your unwanted DR junk onto some newbie. The best place to buy tools is from the manufacturer with a warranty and support.

A: If that's your budget stick to free software solutions.

A: Contact Ace and get a quote. No one is going to sell you a used unit.

A: I couldn't imagine working on an open drive without a clean room. My success rate would be hit and miss.

This business is not for the cheap...

For that price you could get a used DDI or Atola Bandura. Stay away from SalvationData junk.

Super, thanks a lot for the help guys. And just so you guys know better my intention; I do computer repair since three years and I plan to slowly move to DR business. That will of course take time, and I do understand you need a great amount of knowledge and thats why I take some time everyday to learn. I asked for tools suggestion because I know im going to gather DR tools slowly with time instead of a massive investment.

There are also Dolphin Data Lab tools you could consider. They are far from a PC3K but their DFL FRP-WD and SD should enable you to do many firmware repairs, which is the sensible skill to acquire after logical recoveries and before physical recoveries. DDL are in the process of developing other modules that are incorporated into the FRP by firmware updates, for Hitach and Toshiba drives, IIRC.

Their DDP is also worth considering; it's a USB 3.0 imager (much like a DDI) that also incorporates a number of firmware repair features. At $3,300 USD though, it's a questionable purchase for you. They have a USB 2.0 version called the DFL-DE with similar features but a much slower transfer rate of course. It would be useful if you have more time than money, and it can be upgraded to the DDP for the difference in price. DDL's licenses are also transferable, which reduces the risk of investment.

DDL support is terrific, and they provide their customers with many very helpful videos and documents on the use of their tools. They target DR start-ups like yourself (and myself) and offer 5 remote sessions to their users to resolve cases on their (your) tools. They are constantly upgrading/enhancing their tools, they have a helpful user forum, and updates are free for three years then something like $300 for some period after that.
