That's correct, I switched it so only the two RAID drives were on the Intel ports. I will switch it back and see what HD Tune reports it as.

The Intel SATA controller is currently set to RAID. When I loaded Windows onto the Samsung SSD, it was the only drive active in the system. I then connected the RAID drives (configured as RAID 0, from before) and the WD30EZRX. As I began to load programs onto the SSD, I was mainly pulling data from the backup on the WD30EZRX. Occasionally I would find a file that I missed, and grab it from the RAID. Once I was satisfied I had everything, I went into the Intel RAID controller and reset the disks to non-RAID, and reset the BIOS to AHCI. I then went into Windows set them up as recognizable volumes and ran CHKDSK on them individually, to make sure all was well before pairing them back up as a RAID 0. Once that completed, I switched the Intel SATA controller back to RAID, set up a new RAID 0 in the Intel RAID controller. When I started to copy data from the backup to the new RAID, that's when I discovered the poor write performance on them, and started this thread.

A fresh install of Win7 64 SP1 (with all updates) is running on a 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro.

Since this is a fresh install, I'm copying over the backed up "My Documents" type files from the WD30EZRX to the RAID 0 drive. Once complete, I'll resume backing up from the RAID to the WD30EZRX.

However, when I'm copying large amounts of data from the WD30EZRX (iTunes library, ripped DVD VOB files, 113 GB of pictures, etc) to the RAID drive, the transfer rate never breaks 5 MB/s. It took over 24 hours to copy the 356 GB iTunes library.

Is there something I'm missing? Some setting somewhere? Do I have something configured incorrectly? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try to copy a Single file with the size of 1GB and compare the speed with your current speed
see if this will make a Diff.

Ignoring any issues with the 3 TB drive, a 1 GB file from the SSD to the RAID 0 transfers at around 200 MB/s (it was quick enough it was hard to accurately see what the rate was).

A collection of six 1 GB files from the SSD to the RAID 0 exhibits the problem - transfer speed briefly starts out high, then immediately begins to plummet, bottoming out at around 5 MB/s.

The 1GB file took a matter of seconds, the six 1 GB files would take in excess of 20 min, if not longer. It's exponentially slower.

The only time I've seen HD Tune report a 2199GB capacity in the model number is when a 3TB drive was configured as a 2048GiB MBR partitioned physical drive plus an 800GB "virtual physical drive" using Acronis's Extended Capacity Manager. I really don't understand what is going on here. It would be interesting to see what a disc editor (eg DMDE freeware) sees as the sector range.

Edit:

Your original WD30EZRX results are consistent with a 2199GB curve that has been shortstroked to somewhere between 30% - 50%.

WRT to the RAID issue (and possibly the WD30EZRX?), I'm almost considering starting the SSD Windows install over from scratch again. I really don't have a lot of work invested in it so far, and at least that would eliminate any hiccups from a driver.

Here's a screenshot from DMDE on the WD30EZRX. I'm not familiar with this program, and I'm a little hesitant to poke around too much being that this is my backup drive (with no other copy), so forgive me:

I tried both ways. Six 1GB files as a selection duplicates the issue I'm seeing. I did try six separate copy processes just to see what would happen, and that was even worse. Transfer rate on the first file was a couple MB/s, the rest of them were in the KB/s range.

Just finished a fresh install of Windows 7 on the SSD. After doing some reading, I let Windows update the chipset and RAID drivers, and only installed drivers from the Asus website if an error showed up in the Device Manager. This allowed me to install the latest version of RST.

However, the write speeds on the RAID 0 are still horrible, even worse. I'm perplexed.

in this case i can ONLY think about few other issues here

1st. of all, ASUS is one of the best MB and my Fav. #1, have here like 13 Stations of I7 Mixed models from Diff. categories, but never used RAID with it, but am suspecting on the following:

1- BIOS - Drives set as IDE or ACHI or RAID if as IDE, then this is the MAIN issue
2- SATA Socket, which one you are using for those RAID drives? make sure from the manual
3- LAST, why are you using RAID here? since your files are Itunes or so

1 - Drive is set to RAID
2 - Intel sockets
3 - I'd like to use the SSD for Windows and programs. I have two 750 GB WD7500AYYS drives that I want to use for documents, files, etc. By the time I add up iTunes library, home videos, pictures, etc, I'm over 750 GB. Rather than have two drives, and have to split up where the files go, I wanted everything on one drive. This makes backing up to the WD30EZRX easier as well. With the added benefit speed benefit of RAID 0 (I'm aware of the risks), I figured this was killing two birds with one stone. Also, the WD7500AYYS are specifically robust for RAID setups.

Try setting up your 750GB drives as a striped software RAID. Then compare the performance.

Ah HA! I tried a couple different volumes, and learned something:

(for those following along at home, here's a quick guide on Windows 7 spanned volumes:

spanned volume: better performance, copied the ~6 GB group of files I've been testing with in around 1 min, transfer rate bottomed out at ~70ish MB/s

striped volume: same slow write performance as before

individual volumes: one drive was similar to the spanned volume (good!), the other was similar to striped volume and previous RAID (BAD!)

So, I'm guessing there is something goofed up with that particular physical drive. Before I revert to replacing the drive, any recommendations on what to do next? CHKDSK or something better?

Earlier you said that you replaced one of the RAID drives and observed the same slow results afterwards. Do you have two bad drives?

Correct. I was thinking about that as well. I'm theorizing that the drive that stayed from the first pair is the culprit, even though the SMART report from HDD Guardian / smartctl said it was fine. It's the only common denominator among all this. Perhaps there is something else going on with the drive that wasn't seen in the SMART report?

The results from the bad disk look just like the results when they were RAIDed together, so it's definitely holding things back.

Solved! Bought two new 1 GB WD Reds and did a RAID 0 on 'em. MUCH better write performance. Thanks for all the input, I learned a lot. Happy Holidays to all.
