One of my co-workers had this hard drive in an external enclosure. It was put up vertically on top of the PC, so I'm fairly certain it has fallen on its side a time or two. It has continued working fine until now.

Problem: spins up, clicks once, powers down. Pauses, repeats.

Attempt 1: Removed from external enclosure, inserted into PC with IDE slot and power supply. Same result.

Thoughts? The data is important but the company does not have the budget to pay for professional repairs. What are the chances of it being a bad board?

If we can't replace the board to hope to fix it, and we can't afford to pay for professional recovery services, what would your next step be? I realize the alternatives are likely low-probability alternatives and can do irreparable damage.

by the sounds very low chance is the PCB, most likely are heads, this could be recover by a professional no DIY, if you keep spinning that drive may cause damage on the platters, check with any DR lab they offer free diagnostic, for that kind of drive quote should be around 500/700USD

Looking at our records, we have seen quite a few of these GVC0 with PCB issues making that noise. I would suggest sending the PCB to a service that can move the ROM to a good board. Its worth trying if your not going to go with a full professional recovery. Don't try moving the ROM without proper tools and experience.
