I have seen on an old Fujitsu Siemens laptop a POST/BIOS message saying "check your SATA cables". It turned out the SATA controller on the motherboard was faulty.

Probably just need to smack it again, but this time in reverse. This will revert it to an Un-smacked state. After that you need to copy files off one by one in alphabetical order (American English as this is how Microsoft wrote the filename libraries).

After you copy them off, you can Low Level Format the drive by sticking it under a table (this should be low enough). Then you re-install windows, your programs etc.

To restore your emails, just get all your clients and friends to re-send them. This is easy as no-one ever deletes emails. BTW make sure you contact all crime groups and tell them not to send you the ransom-ware virus emails- this is the perfect opportunity to retro-actively protect yourself.

BTW, never smack your computer, "you piece of crap" is borderline abuse as well, but a roll of the eyes along with a sigh usually suffices for most computer issues.

Hope this was in no way helpful, good luck!
