Hi all,

I have a model WD500AAKX-001CA0 drive, now the situation is the following;
I had the drive connected to the PSU and motherboard while doing some wiring on one of the PSUs Molex connectors, the PC was up and running.
What happened is that I accidentally connected +5V and +12V of the Molex to eachother, the PSU shutdown.

Now, one of the drives, a Western Digital seems to have been damaged by this while the other SATA disks and two SSDs in Raid survived.
The PC can't identify the drive no more during the POST process, the drive spins up and makes some clicks before it shuts down and repeats.

The PBA seems not to have been damaged, it's all SMD components and there's no visible damages to any capacitors or such. I haven't hooked it up to an oscilloscope yet but my guess is that I somehow burned the main IC or the BIOS of the drive.

The accident happened a while ago, I just haven't got around to it yet. I was gonna do some measurements on the PBA having it connected to and external HDD PSU/Driver PBA. I couldn't find the adaptor though so that'll have to wait. If there's some known areas to probe or measure please let me know.

The PCB itself is in good conditions, no burnmarks nor damaged traces.

Now, Im no expert in HDD recovery nor the electro-mechanics behind it. So I'm hoping that some of you might know if this device is a lost cause or not.
Any suggestions is welcome, if there's a chance to replace the Main IC or the BIOS or some other component. Please let me know as I don't wanna spend the time on waking the dead.

Thank you very much for your time.

I see, as the preamps mounted on an FPCB wrapped around the HSA it's not replaceable. So it might work if I replace the whole HSA unit?
Is there any JTAG pinouts present on this PCB? I can see some candidates but nothing for sure.

I'm running x64 windows on this machine, the laptop's on different systems but I can't connect the drive to them without USB. So the x86 limit of the program, is this because of the signature enforcement of the drivers? I'll check it out tomorrow as it's a little late.

Thank you.

Hi, If you care about your data don't try to replace the HSA your self, It can end up to be more difficult to recover and more expensive if you fail.
And yes, most probably the preamplifier is gone by the short circuit, the Pcb itself does not necessesary need to have any burn markings on it for the preamp to be gone.

Actually JTAG would help me out, the driver enforcement can be disabled manually during Windows boot and replacing the HSA is not a problem if this is the cause, I work daily in an electronics lab. I appreciate the help but I don't need any don't-do-this lectures, just sharing knowledge.

The lines of the +12V and the +5V did not directly touch eachother, the story was simplified but the result the same. But the story behind it is not relevant. However, why the fuzz? Isn't this supposed to be a friendly community?
For clearance, the data on the drive is not of importance nor is the health of the computer worked on. This was as I said a while ago, I'm just curious about fixing it. No more, no less.
