I recommend that people avoid the EXE versions of Seagate's updates and choose the CD ISO versions instead.

The EXE versions appear to violate the hard drive by temporarily replacing the MBR boot code with Seagate's own. I assume this is to allow Seagate's updater to gain full control of the drive during the update process. The problem with this approach is that sometimes the MBR does not revert to its original state, rendering the data inaccessible.

The CD ISO version is safe because it has its own bootable environment (FreeDOS or Linux).

Why do you want to "upgrade" the firmware?

I very much doubt it's anything to do with the firmware, more like the drive is failing :-(

If you don't need the data, just get a new drive.

Examine the drive's SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo:

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.
