i swap many incompatible boards at Seagate. i hear some click of sound but there is no harm to disk or PCB.

Same is very dangerous for WD disks. My 3 board burnt. i want to test wd10ears's board at Wd15ears disk.




then wd10ears's Pcb was burnt. i saw swollen area at ram chip. i think because of wrong size of ram.

and health pcb is dead now... why?

Probably to much information in Ram...could not fit!
Why don't you try a Pcb that is made for that drive, and swap Rom chip?

firstly ram chips was overheated then swollen.

additionally i feel i 'm speeaking with Michael Jackson when i write this post.

Wrong size RAM will not cause physical damage. But a short circuited motor might, you should test the resistance of the motor contacts to see if there's a short in the windings.

PCB is burned. You try 3 other PCBs which all sustain electrical damage. I would guess your preamp has been damaged.

Connect new PCB, place paper between HSA contacts and apply power. If motor starts, then preamp is bad.

How do you make the connection between a shorted motor and a damaged SDRAM?

there is a way to connect those two. The SDRAM runs from 2.5V rail. The 2.5V supply generator is controlled by the VCM-motor combo driver. So in theory if this gets damaged, there is a chance that the 2.5V rises in an unhealthy manner. However i think there is a very low chance for this to happen, i have never seen such thing.
A damaged preamp has about the same chance to cause this problem.

The 12V side of the combo chip powers the spindle motor and VCM, whereas the 5V side controls and powers the Vio, Vcore and V- (preamp) supplies for the remainder of the board. That's why I can't connect the two, even though it's not impossible.

Moreover, when the board sustains an overvoltage on its 5V or 12V inputs, damage appears to be confined to the corresponding areas of the chip and the related components.

this is right.
i have seen many (% 50) faulty PCB that smooth chip fried.
But i've seen only a few (3 of 150) pcb in Seagate
and never seen Samsung.

Could it be that the WD10EARS PCB was faulty to begin with?

Perhaps you transferred this faulty PCB to your WD15EARS, at which point you killed the preamp in the donor drive. You then tested a WD15EARS PCB on your WD15EARS drive, and the faulty preamp then killed this board.

Did you try testing each board on its own before installing it on the drive?

Did you follow hddguy's advice and isolate the HDA contacts?

Just for completeness, can you check R64 and R67 on the WD10EARS PCB?

Could we see a photo of the whole PCB, especially the SMOOTH chip?
