ST3000DM001 1CH166 FW=CC24
I have a Seagate ST3000DM001 that spins up fine and becomes ready quickly and sounds normal. I get the following output:
Code:
Boot 0x40M
Spin Up
Trans.

Spin Up
SpinOK
TCC:0027

(P) SATA Reset

But then, anything I try to do, including ID the drive in PC-3000 the drive goes BSY and it doesn't drop until power cycle. Has anybody else seen this? Any suggestions?

This is normal for DM001 with weak head(s). What have you tried on PC3K so far?

Try getting terminal prompt with ctrl+z then going straight back to ATA mode with ctrl+r. Sometimes this is enough if you're lucky.

Otherwise try to clear SMART and Glist.

Probably it is not SMART or weak head, but some corrupt or damaged reallocation process.

The only thing I tried so far was clearing SMART in PC3k (besides a few resets to see if BSY would drop, and a few terminal commands to be sure it was responding). I did notice that BSY does eventually drop, but it takes a while. I didn't watch it or time it, but after checking back 30 minutes later it was DRD and not BSY. It just went BSY after Clear SMART command and after 100 seconds gave the redynes timeout:

There is more, but mostly the same as the lines above with different LBA numbers and sometimes different OP= and Resp=. And I notice the TCC: is up to 002B now.

Sounds like you will need to replace heads at least, hopefully no media damage.

In cases where the Plist or some other critical defect table is damaged, defects can be lost and translator can't be regenerated correctly - For this the displayed errors is 'SIM error 1002'.

Maybe there is some hardware error complicating it also.

Swapped heads and rebuilt translator and data is coming off now. Thanks for the input!
