Hello,

I have run all of maxtors utilities including low level formatting the drive.
The identification for the drive is garbled "@a^t&r(9$1%7&6#" and the lba is 2,xxx,xxx instead of 117,xxx.

I need to rebuild the so-called 'firmware'.

I have downloaded mhdd and it cannot repair the hard drive.
What do I need to download or buy to get this drive back up?

I have the maxtor model# 96147h6 60gb hard drive.
with code#ZAH814Y0

Sincerely, Roger.

You have broken IDE cable or motherboard's IDE controller, or missing pins in IDE connectors or... broken pcb.

And now the main question is: why do you need to "rebuild firmware"?

It seems logical to me that the software is corrupt and needs to be reloaded.
This does not seem to be bad hardware to me.

All of the hardware you mentioned (except for the pcb) I can verify that it works.

According to PowerMax I have bad sectors in my Partition table (or somewhere rather important.)

:-)

So let's get to the point, WHAT DO I NEED TO FIX THIS DRIVE?!

IMHO, the first thing that you need to fix the drive is:
Learn how to be more educated.
If you are looking for help, you need to learn how to ask for help.
But you also can do what you are doing and lets gonna see what you will get, this can be a good experience.
Also if you know so much about hard disk, you do not need help.
Maybe you are the person that can help, do you think so ?

Ok. First, data exchange is organised using 16 physical wires of IDE cable, this is 16 bits (2 bytes).
1 character is 8 bits (1 byte).

Look at your drive name:
Code:

Íaøtïr 9¶1´7È6
Maxtor 96147h6

look at every second character — they are equal to original.
So, you have damaged 50% of data transmitted, because of any of 16 wires are damaged.

And all transfer between the drive and host (pc) will be damaged.
Now think, what will happen if you will "fix firmware" with corrupted data...[/code]

IMHO the whole lot of you are a bunch of egotisitcal know-it-alls.
I've joined a lot of forums in my time, but never before have I joined a forum where the entire cast of members wait like vultures to:

a) let people know just how much smarter they are than the newbies.
b) criticize everything said.
c) and prove what a big bunch of assholes they are.

This is not a help forum site at all. It's a 'Were better than everyone else' forum.

I can get more help from the Grinch during Christmas season than here.

:ddown:

P.S. Thanks to the person who noted that every other character was bad.
I relized this could be a hardware problem, but it wasn't definite.

Ok, Ok. and Ok......
Firts, people need to understand that they do not know who are the perosns that read and write the msgs here, so I really think that one good thing is do not think that you can figure out who we are.
I have been reading and writting in this forum since here we wasnot able to see a word in other language that was not Russian.
But there is rules in Internet, and this rules supose to say that to write with the caps lock turned on is like to shout, and i never realize in my life that we can ask for help with this behaviour, any how , maybe I need to learn more then hard disks .....
In the first moment in this forum, the things was diferent very much diferent, and at that time was a pleasure to come here everyday and translate the messages and read and look for something to help me to learn a little bit more ( and I still do not know nothing ) so like this way maybe one day I will stop to say "nonsenses" abouy hard disks.
But to understand this things is necessary some things that sometimes I think that the people that are comming here do not have. And this do not mean a liitle bit knowledge about computer's harware, and about this matter I'm really sure.
Now the only thing that I can see here is - shame on me.
Also I think that Dmitry , Batard and some others that know more them all of us - about hard disks - are very nice people; the answer silly questions they ask ten, some times more then ten times to people read the manual, and we still see here silly questions, silly comments.
How someone can be serius here ?, I do not saw in the last 1 or 2 years one line of guys like - people from Softjoy.... - many people here evern know what is Softjoy...
I have seen here - and this is more and more each day - people looking for a "magic wang" - so they can solve the problems, here there are only a few , very few guys that what to learn something, that what to read something.
So "body" do say that we are here to show what we know; this is no true.
Also I thinik that to write this msg is a waste of time; has a long time that I give it up.
