Hi,According to the latest report from Backblaze.HGST and Seagate 4TB HDD's have the best lifespan or reliability

Are all the Seagate 4TB model HDD's equally as good?

"Seagate barracuda 4tb" are on discount at my local store.I want to get one for myself. but the 4TB ones that have been tested in Backblaze are "Seagate barracuda 4tb XT" not " Seagate barracuda 4tb"

I have heard a lot of bad things about Seagate HDD's. but their 4TB seem to be proven good. but i wonder is it only the case for the specific models.

Hope you guys are keen on helping me

Thanks

I would be focusing on a good backup strategy. One where it doesn't matter if you disk dies. a "crappy" disk is maybe 50% of cause of drives failing, other factors not relating to the disk make up the other. My numbers may be off, but bad power supplies, lightning, things spilt on computer, physical damage, dropping, power surges, user error re also causes. The drives are probably ballpark to being as good as any consumer drive, though personally I don't like Seagate drives. backups, Raid and good environment would be a bigger slice of the reliability pie than one consumer drive against another.

Only reason that the Seagate 4Tb drives have higher reliability there is that they are newer than the 3Tb ones. Maybe they won't see the same 38% annual failure rate as those did, but I guarantee it'll be 3-4x the failure rate of HGST.

My advice, dump Seagate altogether and spend the extra few bucks for HGST. Even a used HGST is preferable to a new Seagate with a warranty.

i don't know about that
what i do know, Seagate's HDD's is cheapest comparing to other brands - at least in my country - so... you get what you pay

I personally wouldn't have a Seagate.

WD 4tb drives don't seem too bad, but the HGST/Toshiba ones seem to be more sturdily built.

If it were my money, I'd buy a HGST/Toshiba (one and the same now, pretty much)

A little off-topic, but I wonder how the HGST/WD/Toshiba product lines will evolve now that the WD-HGST merger has finally been given the go-ahead. According to press releases, full integration won't happen for another 2 years. Some commentators are referring to the merger as a "reverse buyout" of WD by HGST, with all key positions now being held by HGST people. In 2 years' time will HGST's technology dominate the HGST-WD product line, and will WD's architecture disappear into history? If so, then where will Toshiba stand? Does Toshiba still have access to HGST technology, or are they now on their own? When Seagate acquired Samsung's rotating storage division, they dumped Samsung's 3.5" product line. ISTM that was a big mistake. I notice that WD have now dropped their Green line. Maybe that's just the start of more consolidations.

I certainly hope (for their sakes) that they stick with HGST architecture and integrate it into WD, though that might not be so good for our business as they don't seem to fail often enough.

As for Toshiba, their latest 3.5" drives are true Toshiba tech and not HGST as before. I discovered that when one came in for recovery a few months back and even had Ace Labs verify that I was correct. In a way I wish that other vendors would start using the CP stored on ROM model instead of a platter based SA. Sure does make them a dream to work on when they come in for recovery.

Whatever factories are there will stay there. no more will be built, but it isn't like anything much will change. I don't see anyone investing in new machinery. apart from maybe a labeller :)

there is also a down side, if the PCB or ROM is lost...
