Hello everyone,

Following repetitive errors on my wife's notebook, I tried to reinstall system (from the disk itself), failed..
Took the disk out, plugged into my desktop, saved everything, noticed the 3 hidden partition for the boot/install (but don't care)
I checked the HDD (hdtune) and found a few bad sectors. Some where in the Hidden partition.
I prefered installing the new OS on a clean HDD, so I thought about doing a LLF (really not my first one)
so did I with "HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool from hddguru".

1/ the disk was formated at the 50Mb/s speed, showing 14900 errors. Those errors appear to come every 33,554,432 offsets (see below)

17/12/2015 12:56:56 HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.40; http://hddguru.com
17/12/2015 12:56:56 Low level format: [0] TOSHIBA MQ01ABD050 AX002J [500,1 GB] (976773168 512-byte sectors)
17/12/2015 12:56:56 Device capacity: 976,773,168 sectors
17/12/2015 12:56:56 Locking device...
17/12/2015 12:56:56 Formatting...
17/12/2015 12:56:59 Format Error occurred at offset 146,735,104: 1450
17/12/2015 12:57:00 Format Error occurred at offset 180,289,536: 1450
17/12/2015 12:57:00 Format Error occurred at offset 213,843,968: 1450
.
.
17/12/2015 16:00:15 Format Error occurred at offset 500,040,663,040: 1450
17/12/2015 16:00:15 Format Error occurred at offset 500,074,217,472: 1450
17/12/2015 16:00:15 Average speed: 45,5 MB/s
17/12/2015 16:00:15 Low-level format is complete.

2/ I guess those are not real errors but probably linked to wrong parameters in the LLF process

3/ Now the disk is Clean, currently formating NTFS but the drive appears to be à 465 Gb instead of 500 (don't care)and the transfer speed as slowed down from about 65 Mb/s to <10 MB/s (I care :))

Does anybody have an idea of what's happening ?

Hello Jermi

I thank you for the reading, but I didn't find anything relevant to my problem
The disk surface was really almost clean (excluding 2 sectors) before the LLF and giving me an about 65-80 Mb/s read
Now, It gives 14900 errors and a read speed of 8Mb/s

the LLF did something wrong on this disk and it must be a very precise problem
the errors are every 33,554,432 offsets (8192 sectors I guess )form the beginning to the end of the disk.

Hope someone can help
have a good day

I would be buying a new disk. lets say you get it working.. would you trust it long term? Disk don't just go bad because they don't feel good, then get a barrage of different operations and become good. The errors at a specific offset could mean part of the ram is bad I guess, or firmware issues. I am not a HDD Pro though

BTW jermy's suggestion was absolutely relevant. If you follow through some tests contained in the link you can determine if the disk is good or bad. If you have a preconceived notion of trying to find a solution to what you believe is the problem, you tend to miss a lot.

BTW, did you actually do any of the testing, or dismiss it as not relevant?

Hello,

Yes I did the testings, especially with MHDD that I didn't know, so I played a little with it.
The different procedures described in "testing hard disks with some confidence." are really interesting and relevant to people who want to test there disks.

I might have been maybe more precise about my asking.
My question is not about my disk being good or bad. It has 2 bad sectors and they are bad.

My inquiry concerns the log of Low Level Format Tool from hddguru that give 14900 errors Format Error (One every 33,554,432 offsets)
I admit it's more curiosity than need, because the disk works well, it hurts me to see such a log :)

have a good day ..
