My Son dropped a heavy object on his laptop, and damaged the kybd and HDD (Fujitsu 250gb Sata). I have already replaced the kybd and hdd, and have already loaded windows 7, and all is ok. But, I need to recover all the data on the old drive. The drive won' boot-up. I have R-studio on my desktop. But, for some reason, when I hook up the old drive via USB 3.0, the desktop runs for about 35 or 40 minutes, then says the hdd is now disk F: and K: and L: but won't axcess the drive. I have tried quick format, MBR repair, and a couple other things, but nothing works. I used to design & build computers, but that was twenty -five years ago. Can anyone tell me how to access the hdd,,,,,please... I just want to recover the data. Thanks.

Try booting a flash drive with xubuntu or some distro you may enjoy, install gddrescue (and read the documentation) type: lsblk, determine the source and destination media and image that drive. After the imaging is done (perhaps you should try several imaging styles like reverse, etc) you should run R-Studio like Spildit said. Works like a charm, good luck !

Well I went here: http://www.data-medics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=133 and down loaded "Knoppix" and made a DVD. The program works very well, but Linux won't recognize my bad hd,: "hwinfo --short" . It sees my other two hard drives and the USB, but not the bad one. Even though Win 7 sees it, but not correctly. Anyone have any clues..
