Hi everyone,

I have a problem with the Missus HDD. It banged the floor flat (with the laptop of course) and it stopped working.

It was working actually for the first 2 days after that but very slow and turning off occasionally. Then it turned off and never turned on.

BIOS shows:
Check connection cable!
PXE -M0F : Exiting Intel PXE ROM
No bootable device - insert boot disk or press any key.

I opened the disc up to check for head but they were in the normal position (not stuck).

Disc makes some sounds barely hearable but they are there. Not the usual clicking sound.

It cannot be recognized in the system, BIos or even after pluging it in as a second drive to another PC.

Can anyone please help. I would appreciate any help

Probably the worst thing you could have done is open it up, letting dust particles into the drive and then no doubt running it up again.

This has way beyond DIY I'm afraid, especially now.

sadly yes, you took a drive and turned it from bad to worse

The only data that weren't recovered appear to be from the "stiction area".

I'm not so sure this is the case here
first this drive has been opened, (and maybe this drive was powered on with the lid open)

The top surface of that other HDD (a 750GB Samsung/Seagate 2.5") was unused. Could that be the case in this thread?

In that case the top platter wasn't used, so risk is lessened for platter contamination. But as you say, he got "lucky"


In this case, there was no stiction ASUI. So having said that it got a whack, media damage and/or damage heads is extremely likely.


Of course the OP is welcome to continue with DIY, but having opened the drive the risk of contamination and subsequent further media damage is increased significantly.

Only the OP can decide whether or not his data is worth pro intervention or not, but has to be aware of the likelihood of his actions increasing the chances of failure massively.

Slim chance of that, 750Gb WD 2.5" drives are usually 4 head devices.

It's probably a WD "blue" drive with 4 heads (can OP confirm?).

hard to say there are a wide range of 750GB WD drives
some use 3 heads (WD7500BPVX-22JC3T0 for example) some 4 (WD7500BPVT-60HXZT3) and there is some 5 (WD7500KMVW-11ZSMS4) and even 6 (WD7500KPVT-00U4RT1)
so. unless the OP will provide the model, by saying 750GB drive everything it's just a wild guess

Does the drive sound like its spinning normally, or is it spinning down and/or clicking?

it sounds like it starts to spin normally the comes a very quiet stopping sound, not a click but don't really know how to describe it, more like a short humming sound, very short

And stops spinning?

it does it in a cycle, starts or at least tries to start I did not turn on while opened then stops and starts, goes for a while and stops

Then the heads are bad and requires cleanroom work

End of the road for DIY I'm afraid.
