Hi all, I have an old MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX PLUS 9 80GB ATA/133 disk drive. After a failure of the pc main power supply, that caused, of course, the computer shutting down, it does'nt run anymore. I tryed to connect it via usb to another computer, using an "usb kit" but it's completely "dead", no buzzing, no clicking, any kind of noise could be hearded. Do you think that some sort of power surge would have damaget it? Or it could be possible a pcb damage?

Probably bad PCB.

Should be fairly straightforward to replace on this model.

Post photo of PCB.

do yo think that I need to change the bios chip on the new pcb with the other one taken from the old pcb?

Here is the pcb photo:

As you can see, the circled chip is highly damaged

PCB layout - Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133:
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php? ... =117&p=137

I would remove the damaged chip (you could snip its pins with flush cutters) and then measure the resistance between the -5V test point and ground. Do this with the PCB on the drive. If there is a short, then repeat the test with the PCB off the drive. This will tell us whether the preamp is shorted.

Done, I changed the damaged chip with a same one, but when the hdd was connected to the power the new chip shorted again in the same way. So do you think could be possible to try by changing the entire pcb? Or maybe a probably blocked hdd engine will cause another short or any other damage to the disk?

Understood, I have to take off the pcb from the disk and repeat the test, but what could append when I will connect the disk to the power? Another chip short? How can I understand if the preamp is shorted and what I have to do if it is? Do you think I have to buy two pcb?

The preamp on the headstack requires a -5V supply from the PCB. If the preamp is shorted, then it will probably kill your replacement chip. That's why I asked you to measure the resistance at the -5V test point. If the resistance is low when the PCB is on the drive, but OK when off the drive, then that would point to a damaged preamp.

Oh, I probably misunderstood, the test you said must be done without the new chip mounted is'nt it? So, what can I do if the preamp results to be damaged?

Another test done: the chip was cutted off from the pcb, the resistance test on the pcb only was around 4.9V, it was similar when tested on pcb mounted on the disk (5 - 5.1V). This result could be important?
Grazie michael anche per il tuo aiuto, come ho appena scritto, i voltaggi seppur non identici sono molto simili, a questo punto conviene procurarsi una pcb identica per fare qualche altra prova?

The resistance test (not voltage test) should be done in the absence of power. Use the 200 ohms range (or lowest range) on your meter.

When you first replaced the IC, did you power up the PCB off the drive or on the drive? If the IC burned when tested off the drive, then I would suspect the SMOOTH chip or shorted turns in the coil.

I tested the new pcb off the drive and all was ok, when I put it on the drive, it starts to make clicks and beeps, here is a video that show it:

Never done before, probably a power surge when the main supply shorts have damaged it, the disk never took shocks or similar. Do you think it is definitively gone?

Very likely pre-amp is damaged!

Molto probabilmente si è danneggiato il pre-amp!
